Google Sites - 0 views

Google Sites allows you to create and share webpages. Google Sites is set up to help you create a web page (easily it states), collect your information all in one place, and control who can view it and edit it, which is a lot like Google Docs. There is also a learn more link where you can view a quick overview video to help get you started: http://www.google.com/sites/help/intl/en/overview.html This would be a great resource tool for collaborating on a group project.

Google Maps - 0 views

Google Maps is a valuable resource for many reasons. It will allow users to find specific addresses and view the satalite images. Users can click on the yellow person on the screen and drag it down to get a street view of the specific address if the image is available. Google Maps could be used across the curriculum to view many different monuments and other areas around the world.
  •
This is such a useful tool! Both the regular google map perspective and the street view perspective can be helpful when learning about maps. (especially with young students who do not understand the concept of perspective)
  •
Google Maps is the best site out there for getting directions. Their maps are always up to date and the routs they give are easy to follow. The street view is particularly helpful if you don't know where you are going. You can know what to look for when trying to find a new place. This could be very helpful to students learning to drive.

Google Apps - 0 views

This a great resource for students to collaborate with their notes for a project. I have my eighth graders use it for research for their group projects and they also have to share the documents with me, which allows me to see their progress and make comments without having to collect any paper from them. Another great thing about Google Apps is the ability to access it anywhere the students have internet. For them, it's like having a built-in flash drive via the internet.
  •
I haven't used Google Apps with my students yet but am looking forward to showing them how to use it. It will be very useful for them when they are transfering work from school to home.

There is now a comment feature in DOCs, so a teacher can comment on student work without messing up the original. Comments show up as highlighting.

You can do an advanced search on Google images to find public domain and creative commons that students are free to share and reuse.
  •
I'm actually making a very conscious effort to make sure that our students do understand that not everything on the internet is "free" to be used as they see fit. This can be a very solid tool.

Allows students to work on common projects together as well as access their documents anywhere they have an internet connection.
  •
Google Docs also has a collaborative calendar feature that helps with organizing schedules, assigning homework and posting events.

Good source to find video to use as an advanced organizer. I wish I had used this last Monday to show students video of Sonoran Wildlife before we read a selection set in the desert.

StumbleUpon - 2 views

StumbleUpon, while blocked by our schools servers, might be helpful for teachers at home. After you create a free account, you can build your "profile". Your profile tells the website what you are interested in. There are numerous topics to check. After you have entered your interests, you click the "stumbleupon" button and the website will take you to a random web page that it things will interest you. You can either "like" or "dislike" each page that it takes you too, and the web site will learn more what you like. This site could be particularly helpful in finding activities for your students that you couldn't find by searching on Google. I just found out about this site from a friend, and so far I've found some pretty cool resources that I don't think I would have found otherwise.
  •
Wow, I just signed up... that is very cool. I think middle school and high school students would really like it. It would be very fun to use at school with the kids, but by only having control of topics and not knowing what you're going to get for content, we need to be cafeful. I really like it and can see spending hours in there.

I submitted it for review. We'll see what happens.

Great resource for students to find images to help enhance their work.

Clip art is great for my 6th graders because it is easy for them to search in the different categories as opposed to searching Google images.

Curriculum 21 - 2 views

Looking for activities and lessons for preparing students for the 21st century? Well, this is the jackpot of resources. I was introduced to this site at a conference on the subject of 21st Century curriculum, and this site is loaded with ideas for alternative forms for assessing students. You will also find various links to websites that offer interactive and student owned activities and projects.

I like this one. I had fun playing with Google Image Swirl. Does anyone use any of the curriculum mapping resources. Some of them looked similar to what we're using in the "Best Practices" course.

NoteStar - 1 views

NoteStar works a lot like Google docs in that studetns are able to collect and organize their notes, but has an added feature of preparing the students bibliography page for them.
  •
I do like the added feature of this site to help create the bibliography. No matter how many times you go over bibliographies, they are always a pain for students. This helps alleviate some of that pain.
