While some Zulus also had firearms, their marksmanship training was poor and the quality and supply of their powder and shot was dreadful.[13] The Zulu attitude towards firearms was summarized: "The generality of Zulu warriors, however, would not have firearms – the arms of a coward, as they said, for they enable the poltroon to kill the brave without awaiting his attack

Because Cetewayo, the Zulu king refused to comply with orders from mayor-general H.Clifford he returned his cattle and ordered his soldiers to keep watch of the Zulu troops and monitor their moves. When the Zulu troops moved and dispersed across all sides Clifford also prepared for war. The war started and Zulu troops were defeated after 30 minutes with a thousand of their ten thousand men killed, but the war was from over.
