Share Wi-Fi access. I wrote this up a while back, but it's pretty great: Wifi Joiner lets you create and post a QR code that embeds access info for your wireless network. This is great for home networks, coffee shops, and plenty of other places. For the moment, though, it's Android-only.

Get reminders as you leave the house. If you use an online task manager like Google Tasks or Remember The Milk, it's easy to create a tag called "Leaving the House," "Leaving Work," etc., then create a QR code directing to that page. Post it at the door, or anywhere else you'll be sure to see it when leaving, then scan it for reminders of things you need to do before leaving. At the very least, you won't forget your phone anymore! Have you come up with some awesome uses for QR codes? Let us know.

Lisbon is one of 44 school districts in Iowa participating in a 1:1 computer initiative.

Central City launched its 1:1 initiative in August 2008. At the time, it was touted as erasing the lines between the haves and the have-nots.

Today’s generation of students are comfortable with technology. It’s how they learn, how they play, how they live. Bringing that to school provides a relevancy that wasn’t there before.

“It doesn’t seem like there’s the emphasis on cursive handwriting today that there was when I was in school,” said Lisa Donohoe, Shelby’s mom.

“We do have a curriculum for cursive handwriting as part of our SLEs (Student Learning Expectations),” said Mary Ellen Maske, executive administrator for elementary education for the Cedar Rapids school district.The district uses the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting curriculum, which introduces cursive handwriting in third grade, and practice in fourth and fifth grades.The goal is 10 to 15 minutes of cursive handwriting instruction each day

Iowa is among 42 states and the District of Columbia, to have adopted the Common Core State Standards for English, which omits cursive handwriting from the required curriculum.
