For the love of learning: For the love of laptops - 0 views

  •
"Schools are buying tablets with a reckless ferocity. There are pronouncements of how iPads will revolutionize or transform education, without a coherent vision of what that might look like or a single example rooted in practice. The iPad provides an illusion of modernity with no real challenge to the nature of schooling-a win-win proposition unless you're a child. Add hysterical Web filtering, social media bans, and locked-down devices incapable of installing software, and the tablet becomes a tool of compliance, not empowerment. Tablets could have all the functionality of a laptop, but they don't. Until they do, I recommend that schools invest in laptops for student use."

This year, I resolve to ban laptops from my classroom - The Washington Post - 0 views

  •
"Since most students can type very quickly, laptops encourage them to copy down nearly everything said in the classroom. But when students stare at the screen of their laptops, something is lost. The students shift from being intellectuals, listening to one another, to being customer-service representatives, taking down orders. Class is supposed to be a conversation, not an exercise in dictation. "

  •
All told, 39,457 students and teachers will get Apple's iPad tablet with an annual cost of $266 per unit, including networking, and 24,128 will get Apple's MacBook Air with a cost of $319. Only 5,474 will use the HP ProBook 4440 laptop, equipped with Windows 7, which was the least-costly option for a laptop at $286.

Students talk touchscreen technology takeover - 1 views

"I think that's what electracy instruction might look like as an evolution of the literacy instruction that was once, in a past century, primarily the domain of English Studies."

Why (And How) You Should Create A Personal Learning Network - 0 views

  •
Teachers in our district, especially freshmen teachers, have a ton on their plates this year. Between the new curriculum and teaching a classroom full of freshmen with laptops, our staff is swamped! That is exactly the reason why starting a PLN today is a good idea. A lot of people might feel that they don't have time to take on one more thing right now, but developing a PLN will actually make things easier for teachers in the long run.

9 Characteristics Of 21st Century Learning - 0 views

  •
The following take on 21st century learning developed by TeachThought is notable here because of the absence of technology. There is very little about iPads, social media, 1:10 laptops, or other tech-implementation. In that way, it is closer to the "classic" approach to "good learning" than it is the full-on digital fare we often explore.

My fake college syllabus - 1 views

  •
"After the student presentation, which should cover structure and theme but will seldom rise above rote plot summary, I will provide whatever historical and biographical context is both critical to our understanding of the book and available on Wikipedia. But I will sound so authoritative and well-versed that you'd never know this, even if you had the book's Wikipedia page open on the laptop you're pretending to take notes on, rather than your Facebook newsfeed."

"Honan has updated his tale and posted it on Wired where he goes through the seemingly innocent processes used to eventually wipe out his laptop hard drive, erase his digital identity, and essentially break the trust we all place in the cloud."

Why BYOD Makes Sense: Thinking Beyond a Standardized 1:1 - 1 views

  •
I was recently asked, "Why are you giving the teachers choice of a laptop? Why not just go all in with one device?" My answer, simply stated, is that homogenization of any tool is never a good idea in a context that is intended to foster creativity.

Google reveals Chromecast: video streaming to your TV from any device for $35 | The Verge - 0 views

  •
"Google is making another foray into the living room with the Chromecast, a small $35 dongle that allows users to stream videos from a phone or tablet to their TV using Chrome. Essentially, it turns every TV into a smart TV, but it lets you control it through whatever device you're on rather than providing a new interface. "Everyone loves their phones, tablets, and laptops," said Google. "Unlike other solutions, we will not force you to have the same operating system on all your devices." It connects over HDMI and is powered by USB. Google says that future devices from partners - very likely TVs and set-top boxes - will also have Chromecast built-in."

Adapting eLearning for Mobile: Learning from Wonderful Mistakes - 0 views

  •
For many companies such a project is their first small step in providing learning content for mobile (mLearning). Once again my recommendation is to resist this approach if you can. Pushing content that was designed for a desktop or laptop onto a small screen is not the best way to go about learning design.

Digital Literacy Is the Key to the Future, But We Still Don't Know What It Means | WIRED - 0 views

  •
"Moving beyond improving career prospects, the conversation then turned repeatedly to the idea that literacy means more than using digital technology as a means of consuming things other people make. Digital literacy, Smith said, also is about "how to make it do what you want." Or as Geshner put it: "Are you an iPad or are you a laptop? An iPad is designed for consumption." Literacy, as he described it, means moving beyond a passive relationship with technology. "When you get down to coding, you're creating your own tools.""

The Most Important Thing on the Internet Is the Screenshot - 0 views

  •
"Screenshots never used to be that powerful. Sharing one was largely reserved for epic videogame wins or error messages. But now people routinely take screenshots of funny/outrageous comments on social media to share with friends. Twitter users post grabs of things they're reading. College students take notes by screenshotting articles and books on their phones, tablets, and laptops."

Sherry Turkle Says There's a Wrong Way to Flip a Classroom - 0 views

  •
"What I'm arguing in the book is that it's not the presence of a laptop in a class that needs to be looked at and needs to be perhaps critiqued, but really the kind of digital culture that we're creating where we're not valuing conversation enough and not valuing relationships enough, and we tend to look at each other as apps in a more transactional way."

As I walk over to his computer I hope that this is a small problem with a simple fix. But then it begins. Another hand pops up in the air and murmurs of internet problems buzz through the room. How Dropbox Will Remake Itself (And Your Angry Birds) - 0 views

  •
Datastores will run in the background, so apps will still work just fine, even if they're not connected to Dropbox. But when they do connect they will sync up with the Dropbox data center, giving apps a way to synch up between your PC, your tablet and your phone. "All of this is to really to help create this fabric that ties your stuff together," says Houston. That means that a game like Angry Birds could now remember what level you were at when your Android phone ran out of power and you switched to your iPad.
