This technology seems to me to be much more beneficial on a local scale, what if every home had its own battery, then home power generation becomes economically more viable for everyone. If you could show that a system like this could pay for itself in say 5 years then every home would want one. Plus for this to be implemented on a large scale requires massive investment that could be decades away. Share the technology and lets get it in homes by next year. Great ted talk. We can invent and invent all we want, but the fast solution to allowing renewable energies to take centre stage is to reduce the base energy draw. \n\nNEW YORK - ITT Corp. handed in a 3% higher second-quarter profit Friday, with a weak dollar and strong overseas demand for its pump, valves and electronics systems shielding the company's bottom line from the economic downturn at home. During the quarter, ITT won a major contract to provide filtered seawater to Esperanza, a large new copper-gold mining project in Chile's Atacama Desert.

Newmont Mining Corp. posted a sharply higher second-quarter profit Thursday, with record-high gold prices and production gains pumping revenue past most analysts' expectations. Adjusted earnings from ongoing operations more than doubled to $230 million, or 51 cents a share, from $103 million, or 23 cents, a year earlier. Gold sales during the quarter totaled 1.27 million equity ounces, fetching on average $900 an ounce, as the precious metal rode a huge spike in commodity prices. Copper sales accounted for $183 million during the quarter, down from $340 million a year earlier. Johnson Controls, a global leader in building efficiency, announced the new LX Series of air conditioners and heat pumps by York, its leading air conditioning, heating, refrigeration, and ventilating company. They feature a MicroChannel coil with enhanced heat transfer characteristics, enabling them to achieve the desired performance levels with less coil surface area than competitive condensers and up to 50 percent less refrigerant. The units are available with environmentally friendly R-410A refrigerant as well as R-22. 14.5 SEER LX Series air conditioners use a compressor blanket and swept-wing fan blade for quieter operation. 15+ SEER can be achieved when the air conditioner is matched with a variable-speed air handler or gas furnace. A fully louvered steel coil guard, corner posts and a polymer mesh protect the condensing coils from damage. The unit's heavy-duty cabinet is made of powder-painted steel that resists corrosion and rust creep.\n\n\n\n\nIn addition, the MicroChannel coil offers better galvanic corrosion resistance than conventional coils. HO CHI MINH: PetroVietnam is setting up a new company to manage its biofuel production and distribution, according to local media reports. The new company, PetroVietnam Biofuel Joint Stock Co. will have an initial capital of about US$2.7 million. PetroVietnam General Services Joint Stock Corp. (Petrosetco) will hold 51 per cent of the company. PetroVietnam Oil Corp. will hold 29 per cent, Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Co. Ltd., 15 per cent, and PetroVietnam Finance Joint Stock Corp. (PVFC), five per cent. The new company will produce ethanol from cassava. The output will be blended with gasoline sold at the local petrol pumps to help reduce the country's fossil fuel dependence.

You've heard of hybrids, electric cars and vehicles that can run on vegetable oil. But of all the contenders in the quest to produce the ultimate fuel-efficient car, this could be the first one to let you say, "Fill it up with air." That's the idea behind the compressed air car, a vehicle its backers say could achieve a fuel economy of 106 miles per gallon. Plenty of skepticism exists, but with many Americans trying to escape sticker shock at the gas pump, the concept is generating buzz. The technology has been the focus of MDI, a European company founded in 1991 by a French inventor and former race car engineer. New York-based Zero Pollution Motors is the first firm to obtain a license from MDI to produce the cars in the United States, pledging to deliver the first models in 2010 at a price tag of less than $18,000.

It's been a long, challenging endeavor, but there are signs that the economic ecosystem built up around wave and tidal power generation is at long last gathering enough momentum to make the jump from R&D-driven to full-fledged commercial industry. Scotland, with its long stretches of west-facing coastlines, North Atlantic latitude and longstanding tradition of maritime engineering and commerce, is now at the leading edge of change when it comes to fostering development of marine renewables. Wavegen's Limpet 500 system has been pumping electricity from the western Scottish Isle of Islay shoreline since 2000 while the company and project developer npower renewables have continued to move forward with plans to develop the Siadar Wave Energy Project, potentially the first under the Scottish government's Marine Supply Obligation program. Marine Current Turbines is getting ready to flip the switch and fully commission a grid-connected 1.2-megawatt (MW) Seagen tidal turbine-based system in Northern Ireland's Strangford Narrow, while elsewhere in the EU, project developers and the marine renewables community await the much-anticipated commissioning of Pelamis's novel, serpent-like wave power system off the northern Portuguese coast.

Hitachi Cable said that it plans to cut rolled copper output by 7% in FY2009 compared to FY2008. As a result, the company will now produce 5,760 tonnes of rolled copper output per month. Hitachi Cable intends to expand the sales of growing items, such as copper tube for heat pump hot water supply systems and rolled copper foil for lithium ion batteries. In copper strip, the company experienced very low demand in February but anticipates that it will improve in FY2009.

Tokyo-based Kobelco & Materials Copper Tube (KMCT) announced plans to increase copper alloy tube output to 500tpm in the year April 2009 - March 2010, an increase of more than 170% on current production levels. At present, KMCT's plant in Hadano, Japan produces 180tpm of phosphor bronze tube, which serves the heat-pump water heater market. The firm cited growing demand from other end-use markets, as copper prices remain high, as the reason for the expansion. Copper alloy tube consumes 30% less copper metal than copper tube thanks to its thinness. The price of a copper alloy tube is higher than copper tube of the same weight, however, users can gain a cost advantage from lower copper consumption per metre.
