Germany - ABB to construct HV offshore wind power connection, worth US$1.0B, for German power grid - 0 views

  •
Switzerland-based power and automation technology group, ABB Ltd., won a contract tendered by TenneT, the Dutch-German transmission grid operator, to connect North Sea wind farms to the German mainland grid. The order is worth US$1.0B and ABB expect to use over 135km of 320kV submarine cable in the designed transmission system. The project is expected to be operational in 2015 and follows two other offshore wind connection orders for ABB in Germany; the 800MW Dolwin1 link awarded last year and previously, the BorWin1 project. The Dolwin1 link is expected to be completed in 2013 and will involve the use of 150km of 320kV copper submarine cable.

Siemens announces investments in Russia of €1 billion - 0 views

  • n addition to the energy segment, rail technology is also a very promising market in Russia – and one for which Siemens and its Russian partners can provide high-tech solutions. The joint venture established in Yekaterinburg with Russia's Sinara Group in 2010 has already received more than €3 billion in orders for the production of advanced freight locomotives and regional trains. Local manufacturing capacity – in particular, for the production of regional trains – will now be substantially expanded through investments of several hundred million euros. Siemens' joint venture in St. Petersburg for the production of drives systems for trains will also be expanded through additional investments of over €20 million.

Graphene Markets, Technologies and Opportunities 2014-2024 - 0 views

  • Graphene is still in search of its killer application that delivers a unique value proposition or a first mover advantage. In the absence of such applications, the commercialisation process remains a substitution game. This is not meritless as graphene can target a broad spectrum of applications including energy storage, composites, functional inks and electronics. The value proposition of graphene, the competitive landscape, the technical requirements, and the likely graphene manufacturing techniques will be different for each sector, resulting in market fragmentation. Therefore, the graphene market will in fact grow to consist of multiple subsets.

Center for Automotive Lightweighting - 0 views

  • Our objective is to develop the measurement methodology, standards and analysis necessary for the U.S. auto industry and base metal suppliers to transition to advanced lightweight materials for auto body components without wasteful trial-and-error development cycles, and successfully transfer this technology to our customers in industry. With this knowledge, the U.S. automotive industry will be able to transition to new advanced and lightweight materials more easily, as more accurate data and material models will lead to more accurate die designs, reducing die tryouts and new model development costs.

Energy efficient ABB transformers are ready to meet or exceed new EU ecodesign requirements - 0 views

  • ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, is well prepared for the new ecodesign transformer regulations that came into force within the EU`s internal market in June 2014. All new transformers put into service in the EU must fulfil minimum energy efficiency requirements from July 1, 2015, giving the industry and market a period of grace of less than one year to adapt.Large amounts of power pass through transformers, which account for 30-40 percent of the losses in transmission and distribution systems. Even a marginal increase in transformer efficiency can significantly reduce CO2 emissions. The new EU ecodesign regulation covers small, medium and large power transformers used in electrical transmission and distribution networks, and for industrial applications. However, it does not apply to all transformer products; for example, single phase transformers are unaffected. The new legislation is intended to prevent high loss transformers from being installed in the EU, but the first phase (Tier 1) of efficiency requirements that come into play in July 2015 are only the start. By 2021, a Tier 2 standard will require transformer designs to be about 10 percent more energy efficient than Tier 1.
