CBSA reports declines in September brass mills shipments - 0 views

    The US-based Copper and Brass Servicenter Association, a trade group representing primarily North American brass mills, reported that shipments of brass mills products amounted to 19.68Mlb (8,927t) in September, a decline of 14.9% from August and an annual decline of 8.1%. Shipments of copper sheet fell by 21.7% m-o-m or 961,000lb to 3.45Mlb (436t to 1,565t) and copper rod declined by 14.4% m-o-m or 807,000lb to 4.77Mlb (366t to 2,164t). Shipments of brass sheet and alloy tube also registered declines in September compared to the previous month, 6.9% m-o-m and 37.4% m-o-m respectively. The survey reported that half of participants expected orders to fall in the coming quarter compared to the previous quarter. When asked about lead times, half of the suppliers surveyed reported that their lead times had shortened in September compared to the previous three months.

Prysmian wins a €350M project to connect German wind farms - 0 views

    Prysmian, the Italy-based manufacturer of wire and cable announce on 26th February that it has secured a €350M (US$462M) contract from Alstom Grid to supply the DolWin3 project with power cables. The contract, which will involve supplying and installing 900MW submarine and land cables along a 78km sea route and an 83km land route, will connect off-shore wind farms in the North Sea to the German power grid. The work is scheduled to be completed by December 2016.

Main copper producer Chile expects record output thanks to BHPB and Codelco - 0 views

  • Chile, the world’s main copper producing country, said Monday output is likely to reach a record high this year as BHP Billiton (ASX, NYSE:BHP) ramps up supply and state-owned Codelco starts a new mine in the Atacama Desert. Based on the report published by the Chilean Copper Commission (Cochilco), the South American nation expects to generate 5.59 million tons of red metal this year, up 3% from 2012 levels. The country also forecasts world copper supply exceeding demand by 56,000 tons this year and 68,000 tons in 2014. BHP is increasing production at its Escondida mine, in Chile’s arid north, over 20%, while State’s owned Codelco is aiming to lift output to 1.7 million tons with activity starting at its Ministro Hales mine, reports Diario Financiero (in Spanish).

General Cable reports weaker profit in Q4 2012 that may carry forward to Q1 2013 - 0 views

    Kentucky-based wire and cable manufacturer General Cable Corporation announced on 25th February an adjusted operating profit for the fourth quarter of 2012 of US$48.2M, down from US$ 75.4M in the third quarter. In an outlook for 2013 the company said they expect the first quarter of the year to be the weakest due to "specific factors in Europe and Mediterranean and ROW" although the company said it expects "sequentially better results in nearly all North American businesses." In 2013, the company expects a stronger performance from wire and cable used in the construction and utilities sectors in the US and the Rest of the World ex Europe. The company does not expect any improvement in its wirerod business in the US, but anticipates some pickup in wirerod sales in the Rest of the World ex Europe. The company highlighted in its report continuing weakness in Europe, but expects some improvement in 2013 with the outlook in France and the Mediterranean stabilising.

Undergrounding also presents significant challenges, namely longer repair time and much higher repair costs; damage to underground facilities from Sandy reinforced that. Investor-owned utilities in North Carolina compared five years of underground and overhead reliability data and found the frequency of outages on underground systems was 50% less than for overhead systems, but the average duration of an underground outage was 58% longer.

The new products include 300V and 600V instrumentation cables and 600V control cables for industrial, utility power or station control circuits. The company is manufacturing its new offering out of its Tarboro, NC facility which represents Superior Essex Inc.'s first North American production facility for low voltage energy cables. Superior Essex Energy Inc. has plans to expand its portfolio to supply the Commercial, Industrial and Energy markets.

    Doha Cables, a Qatar based cablemaker and subsidiary of El Sewedy Cables, will expand its production capacity for 400V and 500V cables to meet increasing domestic demand. Qatar will host the 2020 Olympics and the 2022 FIFA World Cup and is investing heavily in new infrastructure projects to provide support for planned growth of the local tourism industry. The company also stated that demand from the building sector has been rising. El Sewedy's largest areas of operation are in the GCC, North Africa and Egypt. The company has expressed its plans to expand into other rapid growth nations, including Russia and India.
