  • Global copper demand will rise by 8-9% this year versus 2009 as China's economy powers ahead, the U.S economy continues to improve and Europe follows suit, Swedish copper fabricator Elektrokoppar said on Monday. The privately owned firm, Europe's fifth-largest copper wire rod producer, said its April order books were about 7-8% up on last year due to improved demand from white goods, infrastructure and autos sectors.

Company representatives announced their plans to expand production in Ukraine and increase the number of employees by 1,000. It was reported that Leoni decided to expand production in Ukraine due to difficulties faced at its production facilities in Africa.

    A number of Japanese companies have halted operations in Egypt due to the recent turmoil. It was reported that Sumitomo Electric Industries (SEI) decided to temporarily close its automotive wiring harness plant in Egypt. The plant employs around 700, 19 of which are Japanese and expected to be evacuated to Europe. Other major Japanese companies the operations of which have been affected include Nissan Motor, Suzuki Motor, Mitsubishi Corp and Mitsui & Co.

    Five major Japanese wire and cable producers recently announced financial results for FY2010-2011, all but one of which showed positive signs of growth in profitability. Sumitomo Electric Ltd. and Furukawa Electric Co.'s profits rose while Showa Cable Systems Co. returned to positive net profit. Hitachi Cable Ltd. suffered losses, although they decreased y-o-y. Fujikura Ltd. saw its profits decrease. The results of all companies were said to have been constrained by weak demand from the construction sector, which has not fully recovered. However, those companies producing automotive wiring harnesses benefited from strong auto demand.
