    Nexans SA, the French cablemaker, expects to acquire a 75% share of China-based Shandong Yanggu Cables Group's power cable business unit within six to eight months. Nexans have announced that they intend to operate the business as a joint venture with Shandong and plan to double revenues from high-voltage and ultra-high voltage cable produced by the unit. Shandong's power cable unit had a turnover of €150M in 2010 and Nexans anticipate that this will rise to €200M within five years.

    It was reported that Shandong Xiangrui Copper Semis Co. Ltd. bought a new 320,000t/y copper semis production facility into full operation during late August. The plant produces a variety of products. It's capacity includes 95,000t/y of copper wirerod, 100,000t/y of copper strip, 20,000t/y of overhead railway conductors and 10,500t/y of bare copper wire. Contirod continuous casting technology from Germany will be used for the process.

  • Following receipt of expressions of interest, Nexans is exploring the possibility of the sale of its Berk-Tek copper and fiber cable activity in the US. Berk-Tek focuses on cables for local area network applications and generates annual sales of approximately $200 million.

    Nexans announced on 28th September that after having received expressions of interest in its Berk-Tek copper and fibre cable subsidiary, it is "exploring the possibility" of selling it. Berk-Tek manufactures high-performance copper cable from its plants in New Holland, Pennsylvania, and Elm City, North Carolina, and also produces fibre optic cable in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina. Nexan's statement follows its acquisition of Shandong Yanggu Cables Group of China for around RMB930M in early September.

    The Chinese government announced that it will terminate its old-for-new home appliances subsidy scheme on 31st December 2011. The subsidy, which was introduced on 1st June, provides consumers in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Fuzhou, Changsha and the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shandong, and Guangdong with a 10% discount on a selected group of appliances. These include televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, air-conditioners and computers. All of these appliances are major end use segments for copper semis products.
