ANNUAL CHANGES IN U.S. hotel utility costs and in the Consumer Price Index, or inflation, have historically proven to be strongly correlated. As of August 2022, CBRE is forecasting CPI growth to be 7.7 percent in 2022, followed by another 3.6 percent in 2023. Since inflation has averaged just 2.2 percent since 2000, these inflation projections have hoteliers concerned about operating costs. Given that rising energy costs are a significant driver of the current rise in CPI, hotel managers are especially worried about utility department expenses. Over the past 50 years, utility department expenses have averaged between 3 and 4 percent of total revenue, indicating that hotel managers have been successfully controlling energy costs in the face of fluctuating business volumes. This is particularly commendable given the highly fixed nature of utility expenses. To provide some context to the current challenging environment, we studied recent trends in hotel utility department expenses. The data come from a sample of more than 2,800 U.S. hotels that reported utility department expenses each year from 2015 through 2021 for CBRE's annual "Trends in the Hotel Industry" survey. In 2021 the properties in the sample averaged 209 rooms in size, with an annual occupancy rate of 54.2 percent and an average daily rate of $152.70.

24SEVEN HOTELS, A California-based third-party hotel management company, has partnered with the digital tipping platform Shiny to improve services for over 450 associates across its 30-hotel portfolio. David Wani is the founder and CEO of 24Seven Hotels. This partnership will include 24Seven's premium-branded, select-service, and lifestyle hotel segments throughout the western U.S., with implementation across various hotel departments, including housekeeping, the companies said in a joint statement. "With one of the tightest labor markets in industry history and ever-rising costs, it has become increasingly important for us to recognize the efforts put forth by our associates," said Wani. "We believe that by consistently rejecting the status quo and insisting that we can always improve and innovate, we conquer complacency-and ultimately improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our operation. DIGITAL TIPPING CAN boost hotel associates' earnings by up to $375 per week, according to a recent study by Shiny, a digital tipping platform. Furthermore, guests are 15 percent more likely to tip compared to 2023, with half leaving tips of $10 or more. Shiny's second annual report, "Harnessing Tipping Data to Empower and Motivate Hospitality Workers," also includes a case study on Stonebridge Cos., a hospitality management firm that implemented Shiny's digital tipping platform across its hotels in 2022. The report analyzes tipping behaviors and patterns at hotels using its digital tipping software. "Not only is providing a tipping option for associates a phenomenal benefit to increase take-home pay, but it also is a fantastic way to keep employees engaged beyond daily standup," said Rebecca Robinson, Shiny's cofounder. "In this report, we continue to explore trends in digital tipping to further improve operations and ultimately increase retention."

THE U.S. HOTEL industry is set to benefit from the General Services Administration's recent decision to raise per diem rates for fiscal year 2025. This is the first increase in the meals and incidental expenses allowance in three years, a change welcomed by AAHOA and the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Each year, GSA sets per diem rates to reimburse federal employees' lodging and meals expenses for official travel within the continental U.S., typically based on the ADR for lodging and meals over a trailing 12-month period, minus five percent. Starting Oct. 1, the standard daily lodging allowance for most of the continental U.S. will increase by $3 to $110, while the meals and incidental expenses allowance will rise by $9 to $68. "With government travel being a significant contributor to hotel revenue, it's crucial that federal per diem rates align with the economic pressures hotels face today, including persistent inflation and widespread labor shortages," said Miraj Patel, AAHOA's chairman.

This connects their RMS solutions, including IDeaS G3 RMS, with Oracle's OPERA Cloud platform, accessible via OHIP and the Oracle Cloud Marketplace, the companies said in a joint statement. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP nominated former Oregon Republican congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer to lead the Department of Labor, with former EEOC commissioner Keith Sonderling chosen as deputy secretary. The American Hotel & Lodging Association has called on the Senate to swiftly confirm both nominees. "Keith will work with our nominee for Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer, to put our country and workers first," Trump announced on Truth Social. Trump highlighted Sonderling's labor and employment experience, noting his roles as EEOC vice-chairman and acting administrator of the DOL's Wage and Hour Division during Trump's first term. If confirmed, Sonderling would oversee the DOL's 15,000 employees and daily operations. Sonderling thanked Trump for the nomination on LinkedIn.

If elected, she will succeed longtime director Judith McHale, who plans to retire at this year's annual meeting in May.
