BAIRD/STR Index Rose 6.8 Percent In October - 0 views

  •
A CONTINUING SENSE of optimism about the nation's recovery among investors sent the Baird/STR Hotel Stock Index up in October. Hotel brands led the increase as concerns about the COVID-19 Delta variant began to ease. the Baird/STR index rose 6.8 percent during the month, and it also was up 20.7 percent year to date through the first 10 months of 2021. the index rose 5.2 percent during September compared to August. Still, the index was behind both the S&P 500, which rose 6.9 percent in October, and the MSCI US REIT Index, which rose 7.6 percent. the hotel brand sub-index rose 9 percent from September while the hotel REIT sub-index increased 0.5 percent. "Hotel stocks increased for the second straight month, but performance was led by the hotel brands once again," said Michael Bellisario, senior hotel research analyst and director at Baird. "the hotel REITs were marginally higher in October, while the hotel brands were the absolute and relative winners. Delta variant concerns are in the rearview mirror now, and investors are looking forward to the recovery continuing in 2022, particularly in some of the harder hit segments, markets, and regions that are poised to rebound strongly."

STR, TE update U.S. forecast upward in light of strong ADR - 0 views

  •
THE UPWARD MOVEMENT of ADR for U.S. hotels lifted THE forecast for THE market by STR and Tourism Economics. THE travel research firms released THE new forecast during THE opening sessions of THE Americas Lodging Investment Summit in Los Angeles on Monday. THE recovery timeline laid out in THE new forecast remains mostly THE same as THE previous forecast released in November, with ADR will near full recovery this year. RevPAR is anticipated to exceed 2019 levels in 2023, but when adjusted for inflation ADR and RevPAR are not projected to reach full recovery until after 2025. Occupancy is projected to surpass 2019 levels in 2023. "THE industry recaptured 83 percent of pre-pandemic RevPAR levels in 2021, and momentum is expected to pick up after a slow start to this year," said Carter Wilson, STR's senior vice president of consulting. "With so much of that RevPAR recovery being led by leisure-driven ADR, however, it is important to keep an eye on THE real versus THE nominal. Terms of recovery are not playing out evenly across THE board, and many hoteliers have had to raise rates to minimize THE bottom-line hit from labor and supply shortages. We are anticipating inflation to remain higher throughout THE first half of THE year with a gradual leveling off during THE third and fourth quarters. If that happens, and we avoid major setbacks with THE pandemic, this year will certainly be one to watch with demand and occupancy also shaping up to hit significant levels during THE second half."

AAHOACON23 breaks records in booth sales and more - 0 views

  •
A TOTAL OF 8,000 attendees gathered at the Los Angeles Convention Center for the 2023 AAHOA Convention & Trade Show saw more than 20 education sessions, 500 exhibiting companies, keynote speakers and four networking events, including the Welcome Reception at the world-famous LA Coliseum. the conference broke various records from AAHOA's 34-year history, AAHOA said in a statement. AAHOACON23 culminated in a gala event in the form of AAHOA Awards, celebrating excellence in the field of hospitality. However, several large hotel companies boycotted AAHOACON23 over AAHOA's support for franchising reform. "With a record level of booth sales for the trade show, it was the largest trade show in AAHOA's 34-year history, and a 22 percent increase over 2022," AAHOA said. "there were nearly 520 total exhibiting companies, the second largest exhibitor total in AAHOACON history," it said. Now past AAHOA Chairman Neal Patel officially turned over the reins to his successor, Florida hotelier Bharat Patel. According to AAHOA, the AAHOACON23 Trade Show was sold out, and a wait list was created - the first time ever in AAHOA history. the event also generated a very strong number of first-time exhibitors, 167, which is the second-largest number of first-time exhibitors in AAHOA history, AAHOA said. "the exhibit sales team achieved a new record in exhibit booth sales for AAHOACON24. A total of 170 exhibitors have rebooked and will return for AAHOACON24 in Orlando next year. This number represents more than 40 percent of the show floor space and 100 percent of all exhibiting hotel brands rebooked for AAHOACON24," the statement added. "the adjectives and praise to describe AAHOACON23 and our remarkable AAHOA Team keep pouring in," said Laura Lee Blake, AAHOA president and CEO. "I could not be prouder of how AAHOACON23 turned out, and we are so thankful for all the sponsors, exhibitors, speakers, and attendees who helped make this convention and trad

Associations welcome passage of federal omnibus spending bill - 0 views

  •
THE RECENTLY PASSED federal $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill contains important gains for THE travel and hospitality industries, according to several advocacy groups. That includes THE Omnibus Travel and Tourism Act and THE creation of a position in THE Department of Commerce to coordinate travel and tourism industry strategy. AAHOA, THE American Hotel & Lodging Association and THE U.S. Travel Association all welcomed THE passage of THE spending bill that was signed into law by President Biden on Dec. 23. All cited THE OTTA legislation created by U.S. Sens. Jacky Rosen, Democrat of Nevada, and Republic Roger Wicker of Mississippi through THE Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. What is THE OTTA? THE elements of THE OTTA include THE Visit America Act, which authorizes THE creation of THE new position in THE DOC. THE new assistant secretary would coordinate a strategy across multiple federal agencies to increase travel and tourism nationwide through annual goals and recommendations. "This means THE industry will finally have a seat at THE policy table after decades of advocating for this to occur," said Laura Lee Blake, AAHOA president and CEO, in LinkedIn.com post.

Its northern boundary runs along the international border with Bhutan. the Sinchula hill range lies all along the northern side of BTR and the eastern boundary touches that of the Assam state. National Highway No.31 C roughly runs along its southern boundary. It is the eastern most extension of extreme bio-diverse North-East India and represents highly endemic Indo-Malayan region. the fragile "Terai Eco-System" constitutes a part of this reserve. the Phipsu Wildlife Sanctuary of Bhutan is contiguous to the north of BTR. Manas National Park lies on east of BTR. BTR, thus, serves as international corridor for Asian elephant migration between India and Bhutan. To the south-west, the Chilapata Forests form an elephant corridor to the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary. the reserve encompasses as many as eight forest types. the divisional headquarters is located at Alipurduar. the forest is divided into two divisions: East and West. the Himalayan griffon, beautiful nuthatch, four different varieties of hornbill and the red breasted Himalayan partridge are important birds in this reserve. Among the wild animals, clouded leopard, tiger, wild dog, pangolin and Himalayan black bear are rare. Buxa Fort is an important landmark for this reserve. This fort was captured by British-India in 1865 after the Bhutan War from Bhutan. Later this fort was used as a detention camp for Indian freedom fighters during the Indian freedom movement.

Baird/STR Hotel stock index rose 12.7 percent in December - 0 views

  •
THE BAIRD/STR Hotel Stock Index rose 12.7 percent in December over THE previous month. It was up 25.6 percent for 2021 as a whole. THE index outperformed both THE S&P 500, up 4.4 percent, and THE MSCI US REIT Index, which rose 8.2 percent in December. THE hotel brand sub-index increased 13.2 percent from November while THE Hotel REIT sub-index rose 10.9 percent. Investment was bolstered by some, if not good, THEn less bad than expected news regarding THE COVID-19 pandemic, said Michael Bellisario, senior hotel research analyst and director at Baird. "Hotel stocks ended a volatile year with strong gains in December as THE worst-case scenarios related to THE Omicron variant appeared unlikely to unfold as initially feared," Bellisario said. "With THE big rebound into year-end, THE hotel brands ended up slightly outperforming THE S&P 500 in 2021, while THE hotel REITs - despite gaining 12 percent on THE year - significantly lagged THE RMZ's best-ever annual performance. Turning THE calendar to 2022, leisure travel strength is expected to persist, but THE wildcard for THE overall industry's continued recovery remains a more substantialreturn of THE business traveler."

U.S. to end pre-departure COVID testing for international visitors - 0 views

  •
THE U.S. IS expected to lift its requirement for pre-departure COVID testing by international travelers bound for THE country. Travel industry organizations that have been lobbying for ending THE test requirement welcomed THE decision announced on Friday. Beginning Sunday, fully vaccinated travelers will no longer have to test negative before entering THE U.S., according to media reports. After learning of THE plan to lift THE testing requirement, THE U.S. Travel Association, which last month met with White House officials, along with Airlines for America, to make THEir case against THE pre-departure testing said in a statement that THE decision was expected to add 5.4 million visitors to U.S. and $9 billion in travel spending through remainder of 2022. "Today marks anoTHEr huge step forward for THE recovery of inbound air travel and THE return of international travel to THE U.S. THE Biden administration is to be commended for this action, which will welcome back visitors from around THE world and accelerate THE recovery of THE U.S. travel industry," said Roger Dow, USTA president and CEO. "International inbound travel is vitally important to businesses and workers across THE country who have struggled to regain losses from this valuable sector. More than half of international travelers in a recent survey pointed to THE pre-departure testing requirement as a major deterrent for inbound travel to THE U.S."

STR Predict For U.S. Hotels To Be Full Recovery This Year - 0 views

  •
THE U.S. HOTEL industry is on track to full recovery from THE COVID-19 pandemic, according to STR's latest industry forecast. Progress may be uneven, however, as some obstacles, such as labor costs, still remain. ADR will near full recovery in 2022, averaging $130 while occupancy for THE year is predicted to reach 63.4 percent. RevPAR's average for THE year is set to be $82,down 4 percent compared to 2019, but it is expected to be fully recovered in 2023, according to THE forecast given at THE 43rd Annual NYU International Hospitality Industry Investment Conference. STR and Tourism Economics said changes in THE nation's economy warranted THE new forecast. "We have essentially moved up THE top-line recovery timeline by one year, with THE caveat that improved RevPAR projections are largely due to ADR," said Amanda Hite, STR's president. "ADR has risen more rapidly than we expected-in some cases, that rise was due to strong demand confronting capacity constraints, which enabled solid revenue management, while in oTHEr cases, THE rise was more influenced by inflation. When adjusted for inflation, RevPAR is furTHEr off THE pace and will likely remain below 2019 levels until at least 2025. OTHEr than THE first quarter of 2021, demand has mostly adhered to THE forecast with strong leisure travel, slowly improving group business and an expected progressive increase in international arrivals next year. Of course, THEse are all national projections of top-line performance. Recovery is not playing out THE same across THE marketplace, and as noted in our latest monthly P&L release, THE cost of labor is adding pressure on THE bottom line, which is a contributing factor to many hotels driving rate. Recovery is progressing at a solid rate no doubt, but THEre will still be plenty of ups and downs along THE way."

COVID continued, leaders changed in 2021 - Asian Hospitality - 0 views

  •
AS 2022 BEGINS, many of the issues U.S. hoteliers faced in 2021, primarily related to the COVID-19 pandemic, are likely to continue. the year past also saw other changes, such as new leadership at AAHOA and a new administration in Washington, D.C. Below are the top stories covered by Asian Hospitality during 2021. they also include ongoing economic relief as the hospitality industry continued its struggle to recover from the pandemic; the return to in-person conventions; and powerful natural disasters. the year began with some optimism that the end of the pandemic was near. Several kinds of vaccines were announced in December 2020, and the rollout continued into 2021. Hoteliers did what they could to promote vaccination, including AAHOA's "Pledge to Protect Our Guests, Employees, and Businesses" initiative. Hoteliers who sign the pledge will provide time, reduce barriers and consider incentives to encourage their employees to get vaccinated when they are available. they also will encourage COVID-19 safety precautions, including wearing masks and social distancing. "Thanks to AHLA's ongoing efforts, the CDC has updated its guidelines prioritizing hotel workers under Phase 1c of the COVID-19 vaccines distribution. This is a significant achievement that directly impacts the health and safety of hotel workers across the country. It also recognizes that hotel employees continue to be on the front lines of the pandemic," Chip Rogers, AHLA president and CEO said at the time.

Aahoa, Ahla Create New Advocacy Group - Asian Hospitality - 0 views

  •
WITH THE HOSPITALITY industry facing numerous issues even as THE economy recovers from THE COVID-19 pandemic, two major associations have formed a new partnership to address that need. AAHOA and THE American Hotel & Lodging Association have created THE American Hospitality Alliance advocate for hotels on state and national levels. AAHOA and AHLA announced THE formation of AHA during THE summer meeting of THE International Society of Hotel Associations in Boston on Tuesday. THE purpose of THE alliance is to pool resources and streamline efforts, THE associations said, and it also will work with state hotel associations. "THE majority of hotels are small businesses. That is why THE owners and operators are particularly well-suited to inform lawmakers about policies and regulations that will accelerate THE industry's resurgence. This coalition could not have come at a more important time as THE hotel industry prepares to welcome back guests," said Ken Greene, AAHOA's interim president and CEO. Greene was appointed to THE interim position in early June following THE resignation of Cecil Staton, former AAHOA president and CEO. Rachel Humphrey, THE association's executive vice president and COO, also will be resigning on Aug. 7, THE day after AAHOA's 2021 Convention and Trade show in Dallas finishes.

Leisure and hospitality added 53,000 jobs in December - 0 views

  •
THE LEISURE AND hospitality sector saw some job growth in December, according to THE Bureau of Labor Statistics' December employment report. Not enough, however, according to THE U.S. Travel Association, meaning more federal aid is needed. THE sector added 53,000 jobs during THE month, according to THE BLS data. THE overall economy added 199,000 jobs. "Leisure and hospitality has added 2.6 million jobs in 2021, but employment in THE industry is down by 1.2 million, or 7.2 percent, since February 2020," THE report said. "Employment in food services and drinking places rose by 43,000 in December but is down by 653,000 since February 2020." However, THE report indicates that THE recovery is uneven, said Tori Emerson Barnes, USTA's executive vice president of public affairs and policy, in a statement. December's performance was THE second-worst since January 2021, she said. "THE small gains made are not enough to propel THE sector toward a larger recovery, as more than 7 percent of all L&H jobs remain lost compared to just 2 percent for THE rest of THE U.S. economy," Barnes said. "As THE spread of THE omicron variant continues to impact travel, THEre remains a pressing need for Congress to provide additional federal relief and stabilizing policies that will enable THE return of business travel, professional meetings and events, and international inbound travel."

HOTEL STOCK PRICE volatility dragged the Baird/STR Hotel Stock Index in November. Both the hotel brands and hotel REITs significantly underperformed their respective benchmarks during the month. the Baird/STR index fell 7.6 percent during the month from October. However, it was up 11.5 percent year to date through the first 11 months of 2021. the index rose 6.8 percent during October compared to September. the index was behind both the S&P 500, which fell 0.8 percent in November, and the MSCI US REIT Index, which dropped 0.9 percent. the hotel brand sub-index dropped 7.2 percent from October while the hotel REIT sub-index slipped 8.9 percent. "Hotel stock price volatility continued in November with both the Hotel brands and Hotel REITs significantly underperforming their respective benchmarks," said Michael Bellisario, senior hotel research analyst and director at Baird. "Two different investment narratives drove stock price performance during the month: In early November, third quarter earnings were better than expected, reopening optimism continued to gain momentum, and the hotel brands were hitting new all-time highs; but, by the end of the month, broader growth and inflation concerns surfaced, the Omicron variant spooked investors and impacted all travel-related stocks, and the hotel REITs were hitting new year-to-date lows."

HotStats: Zero-based budgeting is essential amid volatility - 0 views

  •
ZERO-BASED BUDGETING is essential for hotels amid near- and long-term volatility, according to a blog from HotStats. The blog also suggested that hoteliers need to turn to oTher futureproofing or future-cushioning methods. In a recent blog post, Michael Grove, COO, HotStats said that zero-based budgeting, a method of budgeting in which all expenses must be justified for each new period starting from a zero base, is very necessary given The fluidity of The global economy and, ultimately, its impact on hotel operations. At The recent 2022 M3 Partners meeting, Grove first illustrated The pandemic's effect on worldwide profits and how it's changed The landscape. "It's worth reminding ourselves of The importance and magnitude of The U.S. hotel industry's share on The global scale, which has only grown during The pandemic," Grove said in The article. According to The blog post, almost half of global profits are produced in The U.S. and that share only rose as The pandemic slackened. "A massive 47 percent of hotel profits are achieved in The U.S., up 6.6 percentage points since 2019, The result of myriad variables, including a large domestic market and staycation trend," Grove said in The post. "Meanwhile, severe lockdowns and restrictions in Europe and Asia-Pacific sent Their percentages down as The Middle East received a boost in The fourth quarter 2021 from Expo 2020 in Dubai."

Castell Project releases new Women in Hospitality report - 0 views

  •
IT'S BEEN A tough year for women in the hospitality industry, but progress has been made as more female executives took leadership roles, according to an annual report from the Castell Project, a nonprofit focused on promoting women in the industry. the next challenge, according to the project, is getting more women in hospitality education programs. Castell Project founder and chairwoman Peggy Berg released the 2022 Women in Hospitality Industry Leadership report during the Americas Lodging Investment Summit in Los Angeles earlier this week. During the conference, Berg received the ISHC Pioneer Award for her work in the industry, and she told a story during her acceptance speech that encapsulates where women are coming from in the industry. When she was in college, Berg said, the Equal Employment Opportunity Act lifted the restrictions on women working. So, she walked into a large firm looking for a job. "the partner in charge of the office, Jerry, he took one look at me and said 'Well, this will never work.' And then because of the EEOA, he said, 'I will give you a job if you promise not to get pregnant for two years,'" Berg said. "Jerry thought this was impossible. I thought Jerry didn't understand the law. Mostly I thought, if that's the barrier to success, the best vertical I have to cross, I can run this company. And a few years later, 140 men found themselves with a female partner."
