I love this reframing example. And this is a key difference between design thinking and the typical problem solving in school settings. There this line of questioning would be nipped in the bud. The emphasis would be on sticking to the initial question. "We don't have time for all that!"
  • essentially a four-stage process
  • we start at the beginning with deeply observing and understanding, finding insights and deeper meaning in that question, stating that question and then heading into a phase of ideation where we have as many potential solutions as possible. By analytic process we choose one or two that we think are the best and then through the processes of prototyping, storytelling and testing, improve those and get them to a spot where they are ready for a higher level testing and implementation study.

  • One is hard pressed to simply issue a dictum from the corner office that says, ‘We are now an innovation company’, because the keys to success to making this work are not policy–they are culture change. And in order to enable that culture change there needs to be leadership from the to

I'd say public schools ARE losing market share, especially in higher income areas. Kids get sent to private school, to charter schools.
  • a ‘skunk work’, a remote location in which you assemble a group of people and let them produce work under the protection of distance and then install it when it’s done
  • the ingredients tend to be unflappable leadership at the top and support, adequate budget to make a difference, an extended timeframe that doesn’t require bottom-line results every 90 days, and then a broad cultural change that does go into the areas of HR, operations, finance, marketing.

Education Week's Digital Directions: Top Picks - 0 views

  • Top Picks Go-To Sites for Educators Printer-Friendly Email Article Reprints addthis_url = story.getEncryptedURI(false); addthis_title = story.getTitle(false); addthis_pub = 'edweek'; Technology Information Center for Administrative Leadership This site clearly recognizes that school administrators are busy people who don’t have the time to surf the Internet indiscriminately for answers to their problems. It is a one-stop shop of content, expert advice, and interactive tools designed to solve problems or at least point ed. tech. leaders in the right direction. It includes numerous articles on a host of topics, such as relevant research on technology’s impact on education, what data-driven organizations look like, how to acquire technology through commercial partnerships, the best hand-held technologies for administrators, and how to find, hire, and keep skilled technology professionals. It also offers short profiles of more than 60 ed. tech. leaders, as well as a blog called TBLOGICAL, which has thoughtful but infrequent posts on topics such as multitasking, personalized learning, and the iPhone. One caution: The California Department of Education commissioned the creation of this site to serve the needs of school administrators in its state; as a result, much of the material is California-centric. Even so, ed. tech. leaders in other states would likely find that most of the material addresses their concerns, too.

"It is amazing how little feedback teachers get to help them improve, especially when you think about how much feedback their students get. Students regularly have their skills measured with tests. The results show how they compare to other students. Students know how to improve because they see where they did well and where they didn't. They can talk to other students and learn from those who mastered the material. "
