EL Civics for ESL Students - 0 views

    I found this site that has free reading worksheets and short stories that are geared towards beginning ESL students reading levels. It incorporates lifeskills lessons as wells as geography, history, holidays, and famous Americans. It seems like a great resource for social studies. I actually found a worksheet with a camping theme to use with our "Camp-Reads-A-Lot" theme day we are doing tomorrow. This particular worksheet has a paragraph, true/false questions, personal questions, and a little writing section. I also found a worksheet about the American Flag, which is great, because we are studying American symbols. This worksheet has 3 paragraphs of information about the flag, true/false questions, and a Daily Oral Language type "correct the sentence" section. These aren't something I would use in isolation, but they are a great resource for adding to and differentiating instruction.

    What an interesting idea! I would love to create one for the math classes I teach. I always have parents asking what they can do at home for review. Having a central location for them to go to would be a great educational tool. Thanks for sharing.

    I am so addicted to pinterest, and can't belive how many awesome ideas are out there. I always do green eggs and ham with my first graders and many other activities to celebrate Dr. Seuss, but found some new ideas!

I like that I am trying to focus more on non-fiction in my room, as was mentioned here, but realized I need to really make it explicit the differences between reading fiction and non-fiction.

    This article, I found on www.lauracandler.com explains how one teacher with limited resources for chapter books, downloaded a Kindle app to all the computers she has available to her classroom and pays the Kindle price for a book and it can be pulled up on all those computers... at the same time. She even uses it as whole group hooked up to her projector.

    This article gives several ideas of activities that can be used to help increase reading comprehension with special education students, but they are designed for different learning styles and, I think, would work well with all students! The article is structured as a simple number for each activity so it's very easy to follow. Ideas suggested here fall into the Bloom's Taxonomy of questions and can be used with picture books, short stories, novels or individualized reading for students of all ages. Many ideas do not involve written answers which work best with students with learning difficulties. The activities listed promote comprehension.

In the article she gives 12 "lit tips" to help students with reading and writing. Most are geared towards elementary students, but they are very practical and some could also have applications in a secondary classroom. I especially like the "CUPS" tip for proofreading writing, check Capitalization, Understanding, Punctuation and then Spelling to ensure good writing. Very easy to remember!

Before reading this article, I was pretty unfamiliar with what annotating is. This article is well written and gives excellent strategies that will help your students increase comprehension.     This article that I found I thought was very useful with new teachers developing classroom rules and procedures. Without the proper classroom routines and procedures in place a teachers classroom can be much different than they would want it to be. Noise levels, classroom wandering, and time being wasted can all occur. These things can be fixed but not by just announcing that no talking, staying in your seat, and staying on task are to be expected. These must be taught. The use of visual cues such as stop and start hand gestures as well as a gesture to say stop and start over if the procedure was not done correctly. By practicing the routine to mastery, students become aware that you are trying convey that this practice is important to their behavior. Establishing high standards is easier than having low standards. To show this, one must realize that reinforcement for bad behavior must come from the peer group. Research has reportedly shown that effective teachers show that they use the first few weeks of school teaching classroom rules. This is being proactive in your classroom.
