Scholastic Multiculturalism and Diversity lesson plans - 0 views

  •
This site has a bunch of tips, lesson plans, and activities with a multicultural/diverse focus. I liked the "Internet field trip" idea for giving a quick tour of a holiday, country, or cultural event or trend. Many of the virtual field trips give good lesson ideas.

Flipping the Classroom for ELLs - 1 views

  •
This is just a short posting, but I thought it gave a good overview of flipped classrooms and how to potentially implement it into your ELL/ESL classroom. It talks about some advantages to the "blended learning style" and how it frees up more time for students to practice the language in class rather than listen to the teacher and not get the experience of practicing with their peers as much.

Teachers Use Technology to Flip their Classrooms - 0 views

  •
This site had a nice little blurb about flipped classrooms and had three video interviews with educators who use the flipped classroom style in their schools and the talks about how successful it was and how positively the students responded to the flip. After the other site I reviewed was so negative, it is nice that this one was positive and I'm surprised by the percentage change before and after the flip of students failing the courses. The number of students failing the class was cut in half for science, math, social studies, and English in one case.

The "Mathlash" To Silicon Valley's Move Into Education - 0 views

  •
This article is all about the backlash math teachers seem to have about Khan Academy. It talks about how Khan academy and similar sites are not a good substitute to the normal in class approach of math classes. And about how "When you attempt to distribute mathematics through any media, it changes the definition of mathematics." Which makes no sense to me…but I haven't taken a math class since my junior year of high school, so maybe that makes more sense to math people. They talk about how they don't like the approach Khan academy uses and how it doesn't seem to transfer in their classrooms when they've tried to use it.

English Vocabulary--Language Guide - 0 views

  •
This site has tons of clip art in categories with audio and spelling if you hover over the picture. There are many different language options other than English available if you need them. Not all the topics work properly for me though--some just stream through the words instead of letting you hover over them to hear them.

This isn't the most visually appealing site, but it is super easy to navigate and has tons of different activities for ESL students. It is geared more towards adult/older learners since there aren't a whole lot of pictures and the site is kind of a depressing gray…but it still has fun activities and games to play to improve students' English skills.

This site has an impressive collection of links to ESL help websites on various topics. The ads on the sites are a bit distracting, but it is still a super informative. I especially like that it has a life skills section that has vocab lists based on different topics that the students could face. (P.S everything has sound)

This is a great site for phonics for kids. It is really colorful and bright and just fun in general. Also I've never seen a little kid site that has sign language options for many sections/words. If you get stuck reading something and click the words it will read the word for you and there are fun topics with information about them-there is a section about musicians and artists too with short little info about famous songs or pictures. It is really awesome.

Nice resource for finding books to read at primary, intermediate, or advanced. It would be good for adult learners or younger students to find books to practice reading English.

This site is designed to give short and easy explanations and exercises for ESL. I'm not 100% sure how to utilize this in the classroom, but it is an easy to navigate site that students could use for really short, easy English points practice.

Grammar Bytes! - 0 views

Good site for grammar explanation and grammar exercises. It has videos, exercises, handouts, presentations, and more about different grammar points that a teacher could use or a teacher could direct a student to for more practice. It offers short, but descriptive explanations of different English grammar points with tons of examples about each topic.

The Teacher's Corner - 0 views

This is a pretty good site for ideas for K-6 class activities. It has an active message board area and loads of printouts and exercises. It was pretty easy to navigate. The only downside for me is that not too many of the options can be used in an ESL classroom other than some of the reading and writing choices. I'm not sure how helpful it would be for science or math teachers, but it could be worth a look for any of you who are K-6 teachers.
