I agree, Emmanuel. The asynchronous availability of forums is one of my favorite characteristics. Taking the time to re-read the contributions of others allows me to reflect more deeply on the topic, which promotes deeper understanding.
Discussion forums facilitate learning through collaboration. They link learners to valuable resources, including multimedia and professionals. They provide examples and encourage discussion, and they're accessible at all hours of the day through any internet connection.
Discussion Forums are useful in visual arts classrooms as well. They link learners to practicing artists, demonstrating and or illustrating the elements of art and principles of design. They provide examples of technical application used in the creation of works in progress and finished works. They offer thorough exploration of art history, and modern contributions of diverse cultures.
