Discussion forums are a valuable tool because it allows for thoughtful and in-depth learning by interacting with others. Students can improve upon their cognitive, critical thinking, and writing skills by discussing topics with their classmates or other people online interested in the same topics. Aside from discussing topics, forums also allow users to share resources and skills with others. These forums can also bring about meeting with an array of individuals who may offer valuable input and feedback on certain topics. The best thing about online forums is that they're available all the time.
Forums can be used in the classroom setting to get students involved in discussions as face-to-face meetings can sometimes be too much for some people to handle. By getting all students involved in forums allows for more input on topics and opens the minds of everyone due to all the different views. Also, since the discussion forum is always available, learners can take their time to formulate well thought out responses and is not limited due to time restraints because of a face-to-face class. Instructors can make students accountable for their learning by grading them on their responses with others.

I agree, Emmanuel. The asynchronous availability of forums is one of my favorite characteristics. Taking the time to re-read the contributions of others allows me to reflect more deeply on the topic, which promotes deeper understanding.
