  • A virtual learning environment is a social space: educational interactions occur in the environment, turning spaces into places; Students are not only active, but also actors: they co-construct the virtual space;Virtual learning environments are not restricted to distance education: they also enrich classroom activities;Virtual learning environments integrate heterogeneous technologies and multiple pedagogical approaches; Most virtual environments overlap with physical environments.

Although these are very basic forms of VLE, I think Moodle and Edmodo are excellent examples of VLEs that are easy to use and accessible to newer learners. I have a friend in New Hampshire and her whole school was able to continue to conduct classes during all the recent snow storms this winter via Edmodo.

Olivia, that's a great use of VLE that is adaptive and creative. It seems that a smart and creative teacher saw an opportunity to extend the classroom and reach out to their students.

So many cool applications! Maybe I'd take my class for a virtual tour somewhere, depending on what I was teaching. For example, in our new hire orientation, we could go on a virtual tour to some of our community hospitals so they can see what they look like.

Olivia, I use Edmodo extensively in my classroom. Besides posting homework, I also post links to videos which cover math concepts that I am going over in the classroom. Students who are absent can keep up on homework and even classwork. I post links to videos from https://www.LearnZillion.com and https://www.khanacademy.org/‎. Both sites have videos on math and more.

I agree that Edmodo keeps teachers and students in constant communication with each other. Learning can take place outside the classroom. Students can install the app on their phone so ideas can be shared at anytime.

  • synchronous guide to a series of web sites
  • allowing the author to annotate
  • ask guiding questions for each page
  • ...3 more annotations...

This is a great way to supplement your discussions but it has one drawback: if your URL changes in your stored Jogs, the link is essentially broken and will not display. This creates overhead for the teacher which most of us don't need.

I have seen something similar to this done with a Prezi presentation where the links are embedded in the slides and the presentation is uploaded to a cloud or other website.

It is nice that one can post annotations (sticky notes) and keep the discussion synchronous. Most paradigms of this nature place the impetus back on the teacher instead of shifting it to the student. Do you agree?

This try-it feature is nice because you do not have to join anything to take it out for a spin. Does this way of getting you to test drive something make you wary?

This is a great tool for displaying specific web pages in Powerpoint-like sequence with annotations. Virtual sharing during a lecture might be another way of describing it.
