Digital Citizenship DigitalCitizenship Game

This one is good for elementary school students in particular and can be used as a "homework" assignment they need to do with parents or can be done for a set period of time in the classroom or computer lab. This interactive fantasy game was produced by the Council of Europe to teach children basic facts about all of the aspects of digital citizenship (and, at the start, some basics about computers, too). Players create a basic avatar (pick hair, eye and skin color and then one of three "classes" for their appearance) and then navigate their way through an enchanted wood style setting, collecting scrolls and coins that each impart valuable information about safety, law, communication, and other aspects of digital citizenship. Students can save their game to the nickname they use in the game, so that they do not have to complete it all at once.

Student-created radio show episodes on a variety of topics. The program offers a curriculum to help students become audio journalists, which teaches them media literacy skills as they explore topics of importance to them. Even if you do not use the Radio Rookies curriculum, the RR show can be used as one option in general lessons about media literacy, and students can select topics that are of interest to them and evaluate the presentation by the students who have produced the episode. Interesting and personal episodes on a variety of topics.

The Essay Map tool on NCTE's Read Write Think is a great resource to help students develop their critical thinking skills in relation to paper writing. In order to fill out the map, students need to consider not only what they want to say, but why and how they are arguing their point. The tool also produces a downloadable and printable graphic organizer at the end of the process so students can hold on to their work. Great for use with 6-9th grade or any struggling writers, as it takes off some of the pressure of have to remember exact outline formats; the Essay Map handles that aspect of the organization on its own.

Hipchat is a great resource to use as a student back channel, discussion forum, file/photo sharing system, and assessment platform, especially where creative work is concerned. I'm already formulating a plan for a final assessment/group project for my mystery unit next year as an alternative to my traditional mystery writing assignment! https://hipchat.com/
