iCivics is an educational resource website with many different free lessons, teacher resources, game-based learning apps, and situational decision-making online games. The website's mission is to provide free resources to Civics teachers (many of the resources can be applied to U.S. history, ethics, English, and other social studies or even science teachers at all different grade levels) that can enhance their students' learning experience and provide motivation and interest in classroom learning. The site supplies supplemental teaching materials such as lesson plans, entire curriculum units, online essay-writing workshops, web-quests and document-based question challenges. Each learning tool is connected to specific and clear learning objectives, and has coherent, succinct directions for teachers to follow in order to implement the lesson materials successfully. The most exciting part of the website, which I often send links of to my students, are the games! Ranging from a campaign race to the white house, a navigation of the country's court systems, and a scenario game about immigration laws, to a game where the player can raise or lower taxes to try and balance the federal budget. What is most exciting for students are the leaderboards they can strive for, the "achievement" medals they can accumulate, and just the sheer video-game quality of interaction that can engage even the most uninterested students! In my opinion, these games and lessons can be implemented and prove useful at any age or education level, but I could see a very exciting use of them in elementary or middle schools to complement any social studies or civics curriculum!
