Short Description: This is a database that students can use to research a wide variety of issues. The information is presented highlighting the two different viewpoints on the issue. Each viewpoint is then substantiated by three separate articles. In addition, the issue is explained in full and given historical and social context for the students. The main topic of debate is displayed as a question at the top of each issues page. The database allows users to search specific issues or filter their search through numerous categories.
Examples of Uses: This database has been an incredible resource for my students throughout the year. It allows them to research a topic and presents them with the different approaches. Not only are the articles relevant, but they provide personal accounts, statistics, and essential quotes. I’ve used this for current event projects and debates as students decide on what they would like to research. Although we randomize teams for debates, I think a potential use could be an open-ended debate search that allows students to pick an issue and then make their decision. Some students did feel handcuffed by the website and they expressed that three articles from each viewpoint wasn’t enough or that they didn’t provide them with enough information to stake out a claim. Their ability to think critically benefitted their own research and the collective information gathering of their peers.
