Google earth can be a great tool, not just for virtual tours of the past but of the present. For example, when teaching about the ohio river valley, its great to be able to pull it up on google earth and show the contrast between the ORV and say a swamp area near the Potomac. It just helps people become aware of the landscape.

I first came accross this in the BYU Museum of Art. The plaque described the artist as "is a video and electronic media artist who critiques popular media genres by humorously subverting their intended messages and exposing our engagement with their often juvenile content...The artist presents us with a voyeuristic world in which alternative personas can be digitally appropriated. His work poses the question: Can one find meaningful relationships in a virtual world?" Besides being an example of using technology to create art, I like the questions it raises. Do you think that technology can replace meaningful interactions?

  • Marking places is key to creating a tour in Google Earth. A Google Earth tour consists of numerous locations that are placemarked each with information related to your topic area. These placemarkers are held within a folder for your tour. When your tour is complete you may save that folder as a Google Earth file that ends with the .kmz extension. These files may be posted on a website, emailed or shared with other electronically. When a friend or person who downloaded your tour opens it within Google Earth, they will be able to take part in your virtual tour seeing all your images, reading your information or watching your videos! The nice part is that the process is very easy and straight forward.
