Why use technology to Teach Science and Math? - 0 views

  •
As many of you may have discovered, I also found that many of my previous colleagues have little use for technology for teaching. They are mired in excuses such as using technology is cheating, students learn best through lecture, the stresses of NCLB makes it too difficult to do anything but have students memorize facts to pass the tests, etc.

man, this is a great idea!
  • This new, expanded definition of literacy includes the development of a set of interrelated skills that include reading, writing, speaking, viewing, listening, and questioning; all leading to the ability to critically assess and use information. We inhabit a world in which information is coming at us in ways that impact all of our senses. Today's teachers understand that giving their students the skills to interpret information, however it's packaged, is also an important part of educating learners who are prepared to succeed in this century's competitive global workplace. Teachers are teaching their students how to evaluate all types of information sources. Whether it's hard text, electronic informational sources, MTV, or a documentary film, teachers are helping students learn to think critically about the information they encounter. So, how does this instruction look in the content area classroom?

Francisco's Journal » On Being a Latino Writer - 0 views

  • I don’t feel that I should or that I am only able to write or that I am somehow for the sake of publication, more inclined to write about “Latino issues.” Latino issues are what? The alienation and disenfranchisement of immigrants; stories that describe the food we eat and the fiestas we celebrate? I think that if I want to be a good Latino writer I have to be a good writer first. My interest is the human soul and the human condition. My main characters will be Latino but they haven’t always been poor people struggling to survive across the border. Some of them have been successful individuals who like many other successful individuals have come to realize that success is not all it is cracked up to be. Whatever good I can achieve for the social problems that affect Latinos will come as a result of being a good writer - someone who portrays Latino characters as believable human beings. To recognize ourselves in the soul of another - isnt’t that a good to be valued? And so yes, I am a Latino writer although I don’t see myself as one.

The Benefit and Danger of Education Technology | Edudemic - 0 views

  • What many people don’t understand however is that it also threatens the uniquely American ideals of democracy and equality.

I think it's going a bit far to say this.
  • When classrooms adopt iPads or other tablets in lower grades amongst younger students, the possibility that those students will be left behind in terms of the greater society decreases dramatically
  • If low-income students are unlucky enough to attend schools which can’t fund technology purchases, the chance that they’ll find a way out of a low income life becomes less likely.

  • If a student graduates high school without at least a rudimentary and working knowledge of new technologies, their future starts looking a lot less bright.
  • But increasingly, even menial entry level jobs require much more computer literacy than what some disadvantaged students are getting in schools.

How Technology Can Improve Online Learning - Online Learning - The Chronicle of Higher ... - 1 views

  • Quality does not lend itself to government regulation because there is no simple metric.
  • In other words, our traditional institutions typically aren't serving this population of older students any better than fully online institutions.
  • We will make great strides in quality when we define and measure learning outcomes independent of time.
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • The results are published in an annual report, available on our Web site.
  • Quality is not just how many people graduate, but what those graduates know.
  • Quality is also related to how long it takes, and how much it costs, to deliver that learning
  • At Western Governors, for example, the average time to graduation with a bachelor's degree is 30 months, and the university is self-sustaining on tuition of $5,800 a year for nearly all of our programs.

Survey on Digital Games Use in the Classroom - ProfHacker - Blogs - The Chronicle of Hi... - 0 views

  • It’s worth noting that most of the focus of the survey seemed to be on using pre-packaged games in the classroom, rather than making games or experimenting with other methods of play, and the survey is highly biased towards the digital–which is of course not inherently any more valuable for learning than physical games.

A Virtual Tour of the 1906 Earthquake in Google Earth - 1 views

  •
Virtual tours of famous 1906 San Fran earthquake. Interesting idea for history lessons.
  •
Google earth can be a great tool, not just for virtual tours of the past but of the present. For example, when teaching about the ohio river valley, its great to be able to pull it up on google earth and show the contrast between the ORV and say a swamp area near the Potomac. It just helps people become aware of the landscape.

NOVA | A Walk to Beautiful | Two Worlds | PBS - 0 views

  • Yet for women in developing nations—far more so than in wealthy countries like those in North America and Europe—there is also reason to be fearful. One in five African women, for instance, will lose a baby during labor or soon after. And each year, hundreds of thousands of women in Africa will themselves die or suffer debilitating injuries during pregnancy and childbirth. In this quiz, get a sense of the stark disparities in maternal health for women in rich and poor countries.

This is super sad! Great statistic however, to use in a child development or health class.
  •
Compares two women on opposite sides of the world and their pregnancy. This would be really good for a Child Development class or even a World Geography Class.
