"Millions of people are leaving personal information online, much of which is cached and remains available via search engines even after the author has removed the web page... When people who are not the original intended audience - such as potential employers - find this information, it can have a major impact on their decision making process."

ALA | Big Six Information Skills - 22 views

  • Several information problem-solving models exist for teaching and reinforcing the research, problem-solving, and writing processes. The Big Six information skills model (Big6) is one that is primarily aimed at kindergarten through twelfth-grade students. This model is intended to foster the acquisition of research, problem-solving, and metacognitive skills through the cooperation of both school library media specialists and classroom teachers. While a strong anecdotal record exists supporting the use of Big6, empirical research support is less evident in library and education literature. This study examines the effect of Big6 on a class of eighth-grade students asked to research and write about events surrounding the African-American Civil Rights movement.

"Reading is a foundational skill for 21st-century learners. Guiding learners to become engaged and effective users of ideas and information and to appreciate literature requires that they develop as strategic readers who can comprehend, analyze, and evaluate text in both print and digital formats. Learners must also have opportunities to read for enjoyment as well as for information. School library media specialists are in a critical and unique position to partner with other educators to elevate the reading development of our nation's youth."

8 Ways to Rescue Public School Libraries From Becoming Obsolete - 34 views

  •
There is really no reason why school libraries should fear competing sources of information. With the right adjustments, K-12 libraries can work alongside the rest of the data that students access on a daily basis. Remaining relevant is simply a matter of carrying foundational ideals forward and adapting to an ever-changing information culture.

Libraries also have a brand: we are the information centers of our communities. That information may come in the form of books, programs, or access to technology, but that is our main goal. If we start to veer too far from that brand, we dilute our effectiveness and muddy our message. We risk alienating our patrons and supporters while overwhelming our staff to the point where we are trying to do so many things that we do none of them well. Staying on message, on brand, makes it that much easier to communicate with our communities who we are, what we do, and why we matter.
