Do you think that this virus is really as dangerous as it is being made to be, or is it just a perfect example of the media blowing something out of proportion for the sake of writing an interesting story? Is it ok for the media and news to make things seem like a bigger deal than they actually are, as long as the facts are being reported?

If it's part of the same group of viruses that SARS comes from and half the people who have had it in the past month have died, we should be paying attention to it. We should respond quickly and make sure that it is something that we can control, contain, and vaccinate. It's better to over-do it and be over-prepared for something that might not be too serious than to under-do it and have millions die due to this virus.

I think that if this story is entirely accurate, then it is something we must turn our attention to. Nate is right, if it really is a threat then we should be over-prepared than under-prepared. However, if its like the case of the "zombie virus" that turned out to be a hoax last year, then we can dismiss it.

It's not CNN who said it's a threat, it was a quote. Most of the things that seem extreme were said by director-general of the United Nations' World Health Organization. This is scary and if the United Nations is nervous then maybe we should be too. The news should tell us what is happening, not rile us up or try to calm us down. Unfortunately many news sites do try to freak us out.

While this potential threat is scary to think about, I do believe that this is being blown out of proportion similar to the swine flu epidemic. However, it is important to note that the United Nations director general said it was a threat to the entire world. But then again, the same thing was said about h1n1...

I'd agree with Veronica about news organizations today. They intentionally blow things out of proportion, because bigger catastrophes get bigger ratings. So does quickness; sometimes this, as we've seen, is striven for even at the cost of accuracy (remember the incorrect reporting on the Obamacare verdict?). They're reporting this disease like it's the next smallpox, while even in the story, sources are saying they need more information about it before they can draw the most accurate conclusions. This story seemed somewhat sensationalized.
