  I think the article should have focused more on why the daughter was kidnapped and how her life was with her mom, she wasn't harmed at all and was taken good care of when she was with her mom. Maybe the father was abusive, which caused the mom and daughter to flee?

  I agree, I would have liked some more background. The daughter clearly supports her mother, and it sounds to me like the mom just didn't want to lose her kid. The mother could have been deemed unsuitable as a parent by the court because of something in her past, but maybe she's past that now.
