Evidence for the Effectiveness of Different Service Delivery Models in Early Interventi... - 0 views

shared by cwaits23 on 17 Nov 14 - No Cached
  •
The authors of this systematic review sought to gather the available evidence base in order to determine best practice in terms of service delivery models and methods used in early intervention. The results of the initial search were categorized into one of 3 categories of service delivery: family centeredness, service setting, and type of parent participation. Through analysis of 18 articles, the authors determined that: parents' perceptions of efficacy and satisfaction increased when interventions were embedded in family routines and settings; these studies support the use of combined approaches across environments, though they did not specifically compare differences in outcomes in varying environments; and parenting classes were found to decrease stress, improve parents' relationships, as well as lead to improved cognitive scores in children when added to early intervention services. The implications of this review on OT practice support the continued use of family-centered approaches, individually tailored interventions, post-intervention assessments to determine effectiveness of interventions, and therapist feedback to increase outcomes.

Pilot study of a parent training program for young children with autism - 0 views

  •
The school that I am currently placed at is in the process of becoming the first PLAY Project certified and trained school. The PLAY Project Home Consultation (PPHC) program trains parents of children with autistic spectrum disorders using the DIR/Floortime model of Stanley Greenspan MD. Sixty-eight children completed the 8-12 month program. Pre/post ratings of videotapes by blind raters using the Functional Emotional Assessment Scale (FEAS) showed significant increases in child subscale scores. Translated clinically, 45.5 percent of children made good to very good functional developmental progress. There were no significant differences between parents in the FEAS subscale scores at either pre-or post-intervention and all parents scored at levels suggesting they would be effective in working with their children. Overall satisfaction with PPHC was 90 percent. Average cost of intervention was $2500/ year. Despite important limitations, this pilot study of The PLAY Project Home Consulting model suggests that the model has potential to be a cost-effective intervention for young children with autism.

Factors affecting ethical behavior in pediatric occupational therapy: A qualitative study - 0 views

  •
This study aimed to identify the factors influencing ethical behavior of pediatric occupational therapists at work. The researchers conducted a study of 12 currently practicing pediatric occupational therapists. Researchers interviewed these therapists with questions regarding factors affecting ethical beliefs and ethical behaviors. From the interviews, 4 main themes were revealed: 1. organizational factors (some participants believed lack of human resources or therapy space impacted ethical behaviors), 2. therapist related factors (some therapists believed that things such as self esteem, competence, family/home life all impacted ethical behaviors), 3. client family issues (some therapists thought that a child's family/parents could impact a therapists ethical behaviors. For example, a parent may instruct a therapist NOT to stop a child for crying, versus other parents instructing the therapist to punish the child for crying), and 4. Social factors (some participants believed that social factors, such as an overall societal decline in ethical behaviors, such as not having financial support systems or insurances not covering occupational therapy and thus causing for mistakes. In another perspective, participants pointed out that in the past if a patient could not pay for services the therapist would still help them, but now therapy can only be provided if they can pay for it or have enough insurance.

The Efficacy of Play Therapy With Children: A Meta-Analytic Review of Treatment Outcomes. - 0 views

  •
This article discussed the effectiveness of play therapy. The article discussed the criticisms surrounding play therapy. The article found that humanistic therapy was more accepted than non-humanistic therapy. It also stated that play therapy was found to be more effective with the parents involved. I find this to be true when working with kids because it lets the parents have a chance to learn techniques and carry over into the home for better results.
