The application of an occupational therapy nutrition education programme for children w... - 0 views

  •
The study evaluated an occupational therapy nutrition education program for children who are obese with the use of two interactive games. A quasi-experimental study was carried out at a school Brazil. A convenient sample of 200 children ages 8-10 years old participated in the study. Data was collected through interviews, observation, and focus group, comparing two interactive games based on the food pyramid (video game and board game) used individually and then combined. Both play activities were efficient in the mediation of nutritional concepts, with a preference for the board game. The attention strategy was most applied at the video game. It was concluded that both games promoted the learning of nutritional concepts. It was also confirmed that the effectiveness of the games was also affected by the child's environment. This study needs further research and should be addressed with a larger sample size.

Quantifying Function: The Rest of the Measurement Story | American Journal of Occupatio... - 0 views

This article discusses the challenge OT is facing to validate and justify its services due to health care reform, funding caps, and decreased access to services. This can be difficult as the core of OT lies in evaluating and treating function, however, due to the wide scope of practice defining and measuring function in a unified way can be difficult. For example there are two widely used ways of looking at function: the top-down and the bottom-up approaches. There is also challenges because some facilities rely on "house assessments" versus utilizing standardized assessments. A more unified method of measuring and defining function needs developed in order to show OTs value across the board.

This document provides a breakdown of clinical observation standards for OTAs, limited permit holders, and aides. This document is intended to be used by state agencies and occupational therapy regulatory boards. The document begins by defining the following terms: Aide, Board, Competence, Competency, Limited Permit Holder, Occupational Therapist, Occupational Therapy Assistant, and Supervision. The document then goes on to breakdown the various roles and expectations of the different health care professions and the amount/kind of supervision a licensed OT is expected to provide to each profession.

Safe patient handling curriculum in occupational therapy and occupational therapy assis... - 0 views

This article looked at curriculum in OT and OTA programs and how they addressed handling techniques. Using a survey, they found that schools used lectures and lab-based experiences with gait belts, slide boards, and manual transfers while stressing 'safe' body mechanics. Researchers mention that it needs to continue to be stressed in the classroom to promote safety.

Supervision of OT's over COTA's - 0 views

  •
In working in a school system with many COTA's, I am learning the responsibilities OT's have in supervising COTA's. I found these frequently asked questions about the responsibilities of OT's and COTA's in a school system and I think its something worth looking at if working in a school system. Unfortunately, these are through the state of Nevada board of OT. I tried looking up information on Ohio's responsibilities but could only find a PowerPoint, which I could not bookmark for Diigo. If interested further in OT and COTA's responsibilities, look into comparing the state of Nevada and Ohio's regulations.

This is a chart that looks at professional behaviors that should be demonstrated by occupational therapists and which principles they follow. This is a good source to refer to as we continue fieldwork, prepare for the board exam, and enter the workforce.

Kentucky Laws and Regulations Regarding Occupational Therapy - 0 views

  •
This PDF document highlights Kentucky Law regarding occupational therapists supervisory roles. As mentioned under section two, Kentucky Law states that an occupational therapy supervisor must provide at least four hours per month of general supervision for each occupational therapy assistant whom they supervise. Two of these general supervision hours must include face-to-face, direct contact with the occupational therapy assistant. In addition, the supervising occupational therapist must co-sign all documentation within fourteen calendar days of the notation. All supervision must be documented in a log that includes the date/frequency of supervision, type of supervision provided, observation, dialogue, discussion, and instruction provided, as well as the number of supervisory hours worked. The board can perform random audits examining occupational therapists supervision logs. It is important to note that in Kentucky a supervising occupational therapist may not supervise more than three occupational therapy assistants at one time. For those planning on working in Kentucky, this document is useful in outlining supervisory roles/responsibilities of occupational therapy practitioners in terms of supervision.

I feel that is an important document that all of us should look up, read, and study for our individual home states. In Kentucky, an OTR must provide at least 4 hours of supervision a month for each COTA. Within 14 days, an OTR must co-sign all documents. In addition, in Kentucky an OTR can only supervise 3 COTAs at one time.

Supervision - 0 views

  •
This article is not about student supervision, but occupational therapy assistant supervision. The article was located on the AOTA website and provides a model state Regulation for supervision, roles, and responsibilities during the delivery of occupational therapy services. The purpose of the model is to provide a template for use by state agencies and occupational therapy regulatory boards when drafting or revising regulations to govern the clinical supervision of occupational therapy assistants, limited permit holders, and aides. The model is intended to help safeguard the public health, safety and welfare by establishing guidelines that are consistent with professional standards and accepted practice in the profession. I think this is a good model to have in place to guide state regulation policies.
