It suggests that with the change in the legal system, it's important that we pave the way for new areas of practice. It also provides resources for therapists to use to promote the value of OT in a variety of settings.

    With the intention of synthesizing research on OT interventions used to promote social-emotional development in young children with or at risk for disabilities, Jane Case-Smith reviewed and organized 23 studies into 5 themes. These 5 themes include: 1) touch-based interventions to enhance calming and parent-infant bonding, 2) relationship-based interventions to promote positive caregiver-child interactions, 3) joint attention interventions, 4) naturalistic preschool interventions to promote peer-to-peer engagement, and 5) instruction-based interventions to teach children appropriate social behaviors. Touch-based interventions were supported through research with infants in the NICU and showed higher cognition at 12 months than the control group. Relationship-based interventions were supported through research with children with ASD, institutionalized children, and children who spent time in the NICU. Joint attention interventions were supported for use with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Peer-to-peer engagement interventions were supported with the use of computer activities, toys, etc. Instruction-based interventions demonstrated that specific instruction in socially appropriate behavior appears to have moderately positive effects on improving children's social competence.

    This article discusses professionalism in OT practice and what it means. Professionalism was broken down into three parts: the heart, mind, and soul. The main point the author stressed is that professionalism is personal and is the responsibility of each individual. The heart was described as the pleasure and pride taken in our work as OTs. The mind is the specialized body of knowledge that makes OT unique. The soul is the authentic and genuine connections with both patients and colleagues. Each of these can be disrupted but it is the individual's responsibility to try and create a solution to further promote the professionalism of OT.

We as OT practitioners have the responsibility to promote and embrace the principles of our practice. We are responsible for how the public views our profession. Our actions should take root in the principle that taking part in occupations benefits the health and well-being of our patients.     This article is a great article about professionalism during an interview for an occupational therapy position. Although this article is not about clinical professionalism I thought it would be great to share as it gives great advise to us students about obtaining an occupational therapist position after we graduate. The article gives tips and advise to new grads on how to present your self when applying for a position. the article also gives potential questions to ask the employers and potential questions that will be asked of you. The article mentions how you should act in the room and how you should dress to portray a professional demeanor. The article is extremely relevant to us students as we will have to go through the process of obtaining an OT position in a couple of months.

    This article looked at curriculum in OT and OTA programs and how they addressed handling techniques. Using a survey, they found that schools used lectures and lab-based experiences with gait belts, slide boards, and manual transfers while stressing 'safe' body mechanics. Researchers mention that it needs to continue to be stressed in the classroom to promote safety.

    This study was done in 2004 and looks at the development of clinical reasoning skills of undergrad OT students. The student participants took part in a 5-week intensive problem-based learning course before going into fieldwork. (This study was completed when a bachelors degree was required for an OT degree) The results concluded that the intensive problem-based learning course in the OT curriculum can promote development of students clinical reasoning skills.

With continuous health care reforms, there is a great push for occupational therapist to utilize evidence-based practice when working with patients. In fact, the utilization of evidence in practice produces definable outcomes measures that will soon affect payment for services.     An employer can have a direct impact on the effectiveness of an employee's performance, similar to our clinical instructors have an impact on our performance within the facility. This article discusses the importance of utilizing a departmental assessment system in practice for new employees and students that is composed of orientation, education, as well as assessment and evaluation. Through an orientation, students and new employees would complete a self-analysis of their known strengths and weaknesses as well as gain knowledge regarding the department's values and expectations. The educational portion of the departmental assessment not only reinforces the importance of CEUs, but also promotes seeking additional training and education in the employee or student's identified areas of weakness. Lastly, employees and students should be assessed and evaluated on their ability to obtain education in areas of weakness, exhibit good critical thinking skills, and make ethical decisions. Through promotion of ethics in the departmental assessment an employee and student will be able to comprehend that the facility not only cares about productivity, but also providing compassionate care.
