Inpatient and Parkinson's - 0 views

This article discusses evidence regarding the effectiveness of treatment for people with Parkinson's disease. The researchers focused on a multidisciplinary approach within the inpatient rehabilitation environment. The study included 68 subjects with a diagnosis of Parkinson's. Throughout their length of stay, subjects participated in a combination of OT, PT, and ST for a minimum of 3 hours per day, 5-7 days per week. Intervention focused primarily on functional training, stretching, ROM, flexibility, and strengthening exercises. Following their intense rehabilitation, significant improvements in FIM total, cognitive, and motor scores were demonstrated in 71% of the subjects.

The Benefits of Group Occupational Therapy for Patients With Parkinson's Disease - 0 views

This articles stands behind my feelings that group occupational therapy as effective. The article how as parkinson's disorder progresses many patients begin to lose their ability to complete their daily activities and must begin to depend on their spouse or caregivers. The article completed a trial which had an experimental and control group which were evaluated pre-treatment and post-treatment again at 6 months and 1 year after group occupational therapy. What they found was that the experimental group maintained their functional status and psychosocial well-being 1 year post therapy compared to the control group. Participants in the experimental group even showed signs of decreased bradykinesia. Overall, this article supports the use of group occupational therapy for patients living with Parkinson's. The 5 week sessions focused on general mobilization activities, a rest break with socialization, and then dexterity focus. I really enjoy how they incorporate a socialization piece because I have noticed at my facility how many patient begin to slow down their processing when communicating and this would give them the time to talk with others who also need the appropriate time to process what they want to say!

Screening for Cognitive Impairment in Parkinson's Disease: Improving the Diagnostic Uti... - 2 views

The MoCA screen is commonly used for individuals with Parkinson's Disease. The current study is a follow up from an original study. Thus, the aim of this pilot study was to develop an initial version of a new scoring procedure for the MoCA which considers the subtests' power to detect cognitive symptoms in PD, and to test whether it improves the ability to discriminate PD patients without cognitive impairment from patients with MCI and PD dementia. Screening procedures have high value as a time-economic, easy to use tool for a first step in detecting cognitive impairment in clinical practice, but will unlikely outweigh the reliability and validity of a neuropsychological test battery. The sensitivity of the MoCA increased from 68.8% to 81.3% while maintaining a specificity of 75% when using the weighted measurements. This means that more cognitively impaired subjects were detected in both patient groups. Since the sensitiviy increased it greater serves the purpose of a screen, to identify patients with cognitive impairments. The authors suggest this algorithm of weighting subtests may be applicable to patients with PD and other populations as historically some subtests of the MoCA have been too simple for non-demented patients.
