Insights from Experts » Implementing Evidence-Based Practice within the VA - 0 views

This is a forum entry about implementing evidence-based practice within the VA. I found this interesting since evidence-based practice is something that not all OT's follow but we learn a lot about in school. The article talks about how some believe in evidence and some believe in clinical experience. This is probably an issue that will always be around, but reading different points of view is always helpful as we become OT's.

Evidence-Based-Practice - Benefits of EBP - 2 views

  •
This website summarizes the benefits of implementing evidence-based practice in the healthcare setting. This process may involve conducting research within the healthcare setting but it does not necessarily mean a healthcare professional has to be directly involved in conducting research. It can also mean to understand the latest evidence from research and use it to guide patient care to provide the best possible outcomes. Some of the benefits include a higher quality care that is supported by evidence and improved healthcare outcomes. This article also reports that healthcare professionals will also have increased confidence when making decisions and using critical thinking because their decisions will be supported. Using EBP may also reduce costs in healthcare because it is more effective and efficient. Insurance companies are also more likely to support practices that are evidence-based. It is important to understand the benefits of implementing EBP in occupational therapy because practitioners will be more likely to implement these supported practices if they understand the benefits.

The purpose of this study is to describe currently used educational strategies for teaching evidence-based practice (EBP) in entry-level master's degree occupational therapy programs in the United States. Fifty-eight entry-level occupational therapy program directors completed a survey. Results showed that occupational therapy programs consistently use a wide variety of EBP resources for teaching EBP including database searches, literature reviews, and the development of a research proposal. Less commonly used strategies include the use of case stories and journal clubs. The current study provides a baseline of existing strategies taught in entry-level programs that may be built upon to gather more information about the content of EBP coursework, and determine ways to foster implementation of EBP in practice.

In her Slagle Lecture, Dr. Yerxa discussed the changes that were occurring in the occupational therapy profession during the 60's to become a more professional and respected profession. Dr. Yerxa begins by breaking down the steps the profession has taken to become more professional such as: performing more organized, objectified, and accepted research; implementing workshops, seminars, and study courses outside of the annual conferences; the focus on client-centered treatment; the increased responsibility to contribute to health care fields pool of knowledge and communicate with other professionals. From these changes that occurred, occupational therapy became a more respected and recommended health care profession. This document is important because the aspects discussed throughout the article are important for us to implement into our professional careers to not only advocate for ourselves but for the occupational therapy profession as a whole.

Ethics, occupational therapy and discharge planning: four broken principles. - 0 views

  •
This article looks at autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice in relation to the moral basis of discharge planning with patients. Researchers utilized a case study research design and direct observation. They concluded that often OT's are breaking these 4 principles and in turn our ethics and code of conduct. It suggests we determine how to fix these problems and implement ethics in the classroom more.

The Effect of Added-Purpose and Meaningful Occupation on Motor Learning - 0 views

  •
This article, published by AJOT, is titled the Effect of Added-Purpose and Meaningful Occupation on Motor Learning. The article discusses the effectiveness of implementing goal-directed interventions into occupational therapy practice. As we have learned in class as well as in fieldwork, integrating meaningful occupation into our treatment protocols is very important to the overall goal attainment of our clients. This certainly is an important article for us, as level II fieldwork students, as we are currently implementing and practicing different intervention approaches while under the supervision of an experienced therapist.

This article discusses the benefits of Sensory Diets and how to implement them into the everyday routine. As school-based OT's are not necessarily able to treat sensory issues directly, it is important that strategies are implemented and easily accessed by student's, when necessary and following proper instruction, within the school environment.

Clinical Reasoning in general terms - 1 views

  •
This PDF document serves as an instructor's resource to clinical reasoning, why it is important, as well as the process to implement clinical reasoning into practice. The resource was written for nurses but can apply to occupational therapists as well. According to the authors, clinical reasoning describes the process by which occupational therapy practitioners collect cues, process information, come to an understanding concerning a patient's problem/situation, develop a plan and implement interventions, evaluate the outcomes, and lastly reflect and learn from the experience. Within healthcare, clinical reasoning is vital because those with effective clinical reasoning skills are better able to detect impending deterioration in patients and are also able to pinpoint what is impacting their ability to function at their prior level. This two skills enable therapists to provide more effective treatment and often they receive better functional outcomes from their patients. The clinical reasoning cycle outlined in this resource begins by considering the patient and their situation. The occupational therapist must then collect cues/information from the patient, their family, and the environment itself. The therapist must then process the information, identify the problems, establish therapy goals, take action through treatment intervention, and evaluate treatment outcomes. The final step includes reflecting on the process and learning from any mistakes or misconceptions in order to grow and mold into a more experienced clinician.

This is an instructional pdf file that discusses clinical reasoning in general terms, why clinical reasoning skills are important for health care personnel, examples and practical applications of clinical reasoning, and critical thinking habits to apply to one's everyday practice.

Our Mandate for the New Millennium: Evidence-Based Practice | American Journal of Occup... - 1 views

This 2000 Slagle lecture discusses EBP in OT. The lecture begins by breaking down the 5 levels of evidence used in research as well as provides scenarios for use of EPB. It also stresses the importance of continuing education and staying up to date with the latest research so that you can defend that what you are doing works. The lecture also posed five questions that you can ask yourself to determine if you are being an EBP practitioner: Do I examine what I do by asking clinical questions? Do I take time to track down the best evidence for guidance? Do I appraise evidence or take it at face value? Do I use evidence to do the right thing correctly? and Do I evaluate the impact of the evidence?. The biggest barrier to EBP was described as each individual's own attitude and motivation towards implementing EBP.
