The psychosocial deficits, such as loneliness, decreased social interaction, and depression following TBI, can have a negative impact on recovery and community reintegration. These psychosocial needs can be persistent and can last years following the injury. This article provides a literature review and recommendations for treatment of these psychosocial needs to increase the effectiveness of treatment. This article makes three main recommendations. The first is to be prepared to call upon other rehab specialists, such as psychiatrists and psychologists, to help address the needs of the client. The second is to understand that small psychological problems can quickly cascade into a much larger problem if they are not treated properly. The third recommendation is for rehab specialists to focus a lot of energy during intervention on maintaining the psychological health of the individual.
