Georgelas-Cherner deal falls apart - The Washington Post - 0 views

  •
Ownership of the most prominent development project in Tysons Corner splintered recently after a deal between two of its principals - the Cherner family of auto dealers and developer Aaron Georgelas - fell through. The Cherners agreed to a contract with Georgelas in 2006 that would allow the family's auto dealerships to be included in the Tysons developer's plans for a 6 million-square-foot high-rise development at the corner of Leesburg Pike and Spring Hill Road. The two since worked side-by-side to argue for county development rules that would permit an urban Tysons Corner and to integrate their properties.

Pine Valley - A Mountain Oasis - 0 views

By Todd Gilbert Nestled in a valley surrounded by rolling hills and towering peaks reaching 6,000 feet . . . rocky knolls amidst a river of trees that flow through the valley and greet the slopes of the adjacent mountains . . . an Eden amidst the dry, parched chaparral . . . an oasis dense with pines, manzanita and centuries old oak trees that once shaded only the Indians that inhabited the region: "El Valle de los Pinos", as this beautiful mountain valley was known before 1869, describes the abrupt change in scenery that only nature can explain. The surrounding desert terrain compliments the unique valley of over 1,200 acres where cedars and pines flourish amidst lush green meadows of sage and wild lilac. Early settlers of the region included the Cocopah and Coyote Indians and later the Machados family of Old Town who had come to California as pioneers in the late 18th century. For a number of years, Don Manuel Machado and his wife, Serafina Valdes operated a cattle grazing station and lived out of a Adobe house they had built. During the summer, thin and starved longhorn cattle were brought in to fatten up in the rich pastureland. In 1869, former Butterfield Stage coach driver, Captain William S. Emery and his wife settled in the area. Being Scotch-English pioneers from New England, the sound of Spanish words were unpleasant to their ears and, quickly, renamed "El Valle de los Pinos" to its literal translation of Pine Valley. Either way, the valley boasts one of the oldest names in the county. Charles F. Emery, son of Captain Emery, used to tell the story of his father's experiences on the old desert stage route and in dealing with the local Cocopah and Coyote Indians who were constantly running off the cattle he had accumulated. One old Indian, Antonio, told Captain Emery he could show him a beautiful valley in the mountains where there was plenty of grass for cattle where nobody else lived. So the two came on horseback over the Vallecitos trail th

Investment Group Of Springhill South Korea Bankard Scam - 0 views

Over 200 people have been arrested in connection with a massive bank card fraud that may have bilked banks and clients out of a billion yuan ($159 million), the Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday. The Ministry of Public Security detained 208 people in eight provinces and municipalities. Police said they confiscated thousands of bank cards and have frozen 150 bank accounts. Police in eight regions coordinated the bust on June 11, following a lengthy investigation of key suspects including a Taiwanese surnamed Wu and a South Korean surnamed Park. The investigation began in November 2011, when two Taiwanese were caught using a counterfeit bank card to withdraw cash from an automatic teller machine (ATM) in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, according to the ministry. A similarly faked card was used three days later when another suspect tried to withdraw money from an ATM on Jiefang Road in the city. The police investigation concludes that banks in South Korea and Thailand were the main targets of the swindle. Local police in Shaoxing confirmed to the Global Times yesterday that 146 suspects were arrested in the city alone. "All 208 suspects are now here for questioning, and no further details can be provided at the moment," a police officer surnamed Sun from Shaoxing public security bureau, told the Global Times. The Shanghai-based Oriental Morning Post reported that the bust involves the largest amount of money and the most suspects of any bank card fraud in China. It is not known how the gang may have managed to swindle hundreds of millions of yuan from Chinese ATMs without being detected earlier. Police say suspects in South Korea bought the phone numbers of bank clients online, and managed to scam them by posing as bank officials who were concerned their accounts were at risk, said Xinhua. The clients were told to use their account number and password to log onto seemingly official South Korean websites. After obtaining the bank client's account in

Optimist Lake now completely empty | Fox10tv.com - 0 views

  • Matt Barrentine MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A lake in West Mobile has disappeared. Ironically it's vanishing act was the result of record rainfall that drained Optimist's lake and flooded two homes in the process. Now neighbors off Cody road want the lake back and the drainage problem, caused by an undermined dam, solved for good. Completely empty...? Before last week's heavy rains, Optimist Lake was a pretty little lake surrounded by homes off Cody road. Now it is a brown, muddy bog filled with trash and dead fish. Marlon Brooks was looking over the damaged dam that traps the water in the lake. He said, "It looks like the water has undermined the dam out there and pretty much flooded out the woods out back out here." The Bamboo Steakhouse restaurant sits on the lake. They just started having live music on their deck on Monday nights, but owner John Nguyen is worried if folks will show up tonight. He told us, "It's going to hurt my business if I don't get this back. It's the biggest asset to our restaurant."
