The urban and the sound are very much one and the same. Noises and tweets, squeaks and bangs, whispers and rattle are constantly present and play an important part in the shaping of the environment. consciously or unconsciously we are attracted or repulsed by certain sounds in specific configurations. But how is it interlinked with time and space, how does it tie in with time and certainly space, the much talked focus in the urban discussion.

Synopsis: this bitter-sweet comedy tells the story of a man who suffers from hyper-acoustic sensitivity, which makes his life in Tel Aviv, one of the noisiest urban locations on earth, a living hell. His quest to live in peace and quiet by politely asking neighbors for basic consideration, or by addressing the boisterous passing-by to re-consider the mere fact they are 'not alone in the world', or even by trying to plea to the authorities: Police and Municipality - or even worse: talking the law into his own hands: all means have proved nothing but his bitter impotency in the face of the irrepressible Israeli "noise-mania". So he decides to act. He constructs a special surveillance apparatus in order to monitor and control the invading street-neighbor-noise, and with the help of a "God-like" megaphone he takes control over the intruding street noise. His fantasy to silence also the noise within his own family life, turns co-existence with him unbearable. It doesn't take long before it becomes inevitable that he would have to pay the price.

"Artist Neil Harbisson was born completely color blind, but these days a device attached to his head turns color into audible frequencies. Instead of seeing a world in grayscale, Harbisson can hear a symphony of color - and yes, even listen to faces and paintings. "

"Open Space 2014" is an exhibition introducing works of media art and other forms of artistic expression born out of today's media environments, to a broad audience. Literally a beginner's guide to media art, the exhibition features leading works from the realm of media art, artworks incorporating cutting-edge technologies, works with a critical standpoint, and in addition, projects that are currently in progress at various research institutions. All of them are being displayed along with explanatory notes designed to help the visitor gain a better understanding, according to our aim to present media art in a fun and easily accessible way. Also on the schedule during the exhibition period are a number of related programs including talk sessions, lectures, symposia and workshops with artists and experts, as well as guided tours around the exhibits with explanations by the curatorial staff. A space that combines ICC's diverse functions, Open Space integrates galleries, a mini theater, and the video archive "HIVE." Since its launch in 2006, the exhibition has been held as an admission-free event with changing contents each year. Based on the mission of ICC, it aims to function as an open platform where possibilities of communication culture and art created with the help of advanced technologies can be presented to a large number of people.

""When I'm on location, it's a totally solitary activity. You put some headphones on, and at that moment, nobody can hear the world like you can." Chris Watson is talking to me over Skype from his home in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, explaining the details of a soon to be released smartphone app, which contains a cherry-picked collection of his sound recordings made as far back as the 1990s. Many originally appeared on CD (via Touch, who now also have an iPhone app), but Watson is enthusiastic about finding new formats such as this for his work. "The app is going to be used by individuals, and that means there's an individual at either end of the chain," he says. "I like the idea that wherever you are, you can drop into this environment." "

"Jacob Kirkegaard has just come back from a last visit to his first major solo exhibition at Roskilde Museum of Contemporary Art, "Earside Out". An exhibition which displayed Kirkegaard's work as a sound artist, although his body of work spreads into field recordings, film sound, photography as well as producing and creating experimental music. "Earside Out" garnered much interest and Kirkegaard's parting gesture was to give a talk in the local library, very much preaching to the unconverted. It sounds like hard work, but Kirkegaard seems to enjoy precisely this, and very much prefers it to being idle."

For centuries, residents of Kuşköy have communicated over rural Turkey's vast distances with kuş dili, which literally means "bird language."

"I would like to begin by talking about something I feel is quite astonishing - this built-in sound analyzer and source that we all have. One of the most astonishing things about it is that we are largely unaware of it. "

"This monthly theme of "Mistakes" got me thinking. Mistakes to me can be a negative outcome to an intended or an unintended action. Something called a "dictionary" says mistakes can be "an action or judgment that is misguided or wrong." But there are also "happy accidents" which is more fun to talk about than "sad accidents" so lets do that. As a fairly high-strung person, "rolling with it" doesn't come very naturally. Fortunately my chosen vocation and hobbies allows for a little bit of wiggle room when creating and/or messing up. "

"Bernie Krause is an American musician and soundscape ecologist. He has been recording, researching and archiving soundscapes for over 40 years. ....It celebrates the work of Krause's work, adding a simple but fitting and room-filling spectrogram to the recorded soundscapes, emerging the listener in sound, and being able to recognise the animals with visual cues. Here's a 360-degrees video, if your browser can play that: The idea is quite simple, but the soundscapes are compelling and diverse. While it can sometimes be hard to get an audience interested in sound-based works in a museum, United Visual Artists did a great job of adding a simple visual counterpart to keep those who aren't used to only listen to sound, interested. "Onda started talking to people who work in radio and learning about mysterious transmissions, coded messages from government broadcasts, and other unusual sounds that float through the radio waves. But nobody could decipher the recordings he'd been collecting."

"As someone whose entry point into the vast world of musical repertoire has mostly been through collecting records and since the most unusual and unique things are usually the hardest ones to hear live, Maryanne Amacher has always been something of an enigma to me. A composer of vast, space-specific sonic panoramas at crushingly loud volumes, Amacher defies containment and commodification. When Tzadik finally released a CD of her music, I finally thought I was able to experience it. But actually, I hadn't. Two speakers can't really convey what she is doing in space and as an apartment dweller the kinds of volumes she demands would inevitably lead to an eviction. Yet through listening and reading her essays on various subjects, especially her fascinating contribution to a panel on Cage's influence where she spoke about creating a music that is somehow liberated from time, I felt compelled to talk to her. We spent only about an hour in conversation-the unfortunate time constraints of a reality based on schedules-but it felt like it could have gone on forever. And, in some ways, it will…"
