Avid, creator of Protools and Sibelius 6 software gave top honors to Pro Tools 8 in the DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) category, for quality and quantity, and top honors to Sibelius 6 for its tools and support. Has anyone been using the new Pro Tools 8? I know they say quality is better than quantity but what happens if you have both? (but does pro tools 8 really have both?)

Mastering proffesional Adrian Carr of ACMastering recently posted a good article explaining mastering in fairly simple terms for those who are still convinced that "mixing and mastering" is one word. One thing that really helped me to understand mastering back when it was a big question-mark to me, was the differences in the files types each technique used. When mastering a song your are working off of the final exported two-track (that Wav or Aiff file all your hard work went into), whil with mixing you are working with each individual track that you laid individually during your recording, at this point your song is probably still sitting on some virtual sequencer like cubase, garage band or protools. I dunno, it helped me understand it a little more.

the machinery of culture is constantly changing and i hate to say it but that means as a creator of music you gotta be constantly changing too. To help soften the blow of the many more cultural changes down the road, then surrounding yourself with a real social network of musicians and partners that may be able to understand certain shifts more easily than yourself could be a good step in battling your future market woes.

Do you make music for the money or because you love to create? I personally create music because a chip was genetically implanted into my skull when i was just one month old, and since then music and i have shared a certain bond (at least i think thats what happened). I actually feel that monetizing your music can kind of hurt the art. If you adopt the notion that the reason you create is all about the money. It is a firm belief of mine, that if you do something for the love, and you are truely blessed with god given talent then the money will fall in line with the love and the love will never be perverted.

Country Music Hall of Famer Carl Smith Passed Away Master honky-tonk stylist Carl Smith, the dashing "Country Gentleman" who was among the most successful Nashville-based artists of the 1950s, died Saturday, Jan. 16 at his home in Franklin. The Country Music Hall of Famer was 82. Radio exposure on WSM and on the Opry helped Mr. Smith to gain notoriety, as did his tours with Hank Williams and others he will be missed.
