      Hearing things like this makes me aware of how important it can be to follow local politics. I don't know enough about DC, but I do find it surprising that 900 teachers were hired over the summer and not there will be layoffs.

    The DC school system is being forced to layoff teachers and consolidate some classes because of budget problems. This comes as a surprise after 900 teachers were hired this summer.

  • Two days of protests by DC students in response to unfair teacher layoffs. Students held protests on September 28 at the DCPS central office and at Duke Ellington High School for the arts on September 29 at lunch time. These videos say it all. Our students are following the lead of the rank and file teacher rally held on last Thursday, September 24. What a tribute to DC teachers. You have taught them well !

      The teachers at Takoma Education Center told me about the protests and I think it really emphasizes how much of an impact the lay-offs have on the students themselves and the level of personal investment they must feel in their education.

    I thought this might be interesting to share in light of what is happening with DCPS. Yesterday was my first day at my practicum placement and during lunch a few teachers were talking about the "buzz on the blogs" and the firings. All of them mentioned the students protestes by the students at the Duke Ellington School.

    I happened to see this clip on TV this morning while having my cereal and getting ready to head off to my practicum placement. In it, Rhee addresses the security issues and says that the security company "went under" and that is why police were called in. This was a big topic among my teachers today at school.... they feel that the story about the security company "going under" is false and are pretty angry that they had NO security last Friday and that teachers had to take turns outside the school acting as security.

      The study has shown that the disruption in schools appeared to hurt student learning in the months after the closing was announced. This makes me wonder, of course, about the recent layoffs in DC. While schools have not been closed, there obviously has been a lot of disruption and many classes are most likely behind schedule.
  • Instead of closing schools permanently, or for a year, and then reopening with a new staff, he shifted to the turnaround approach, in which the staff of failing schools was replaced over the summer but the same students returned in the fall. The new report focused only on the elementary schools closed permanently from 2001 to 2006, and thus offers no conclusions about the effectiveness of the turnaround strategy.

      Because of the disruption caused by the school closing, Duncan switchd to a strategy in which the staff was changed over the summer but the same students returned to the school. There are no conclusive studies about the effectiveness of this strategy. But, it does seem to show the danger of mass firings in the middle of the school year.

    When Arne Duncan presided over Chicago public schools, he closed failings schools. Recent studies show that this did not actually help the students at those schools.

    When I was there on Wednesday, the firings were supposed to happen. I can't even imagine what the last two days were like, waiting and waiting. No matter what you feel about the firings, the way in which they were done, were completely inappropriate and there was far more disruption than needed to happen. I hope my teacher is still there this week.

She said that the first few weeks of the term have allowed principals to see their new instructors in action and that all personnel would be evaluated on the basis of performance and the needs of their schools.

      Rhee said that principals will have had the first few weeks of the school year to evaluate their new hires in action. This leads me to believe that the teacher reductions will take place during the academic year. In addition to worries about larger class sizes, I wonder what the impact could be to the children of changing teachers during the year? I feel that aside from upsetting established routines, it could, in some cases, lead to feelings of abandonment and mistrust.

    Video of the McKinley student protest outside Rhee's office building. Notice that they are chanting, "No teachers, no peace"--a play on words from a popular civil rights era chant "No justice, no peace." Tomorrow is going to be utter chaos, my cooperating teacher is there but no more Mr. Hawkins who was a wonderful man. :(
