    In looking for primary sources and documents for lesson plans, I have noticed that most of the search results center on U.S. history and its related documents. I wanted to find a website that might provide links to a broader collection of documents on world history. This website has links to European historical documents, broken down by country as well as time period. Each link leads to a collection of other links where one can search for primary documents. It's admittedly a bit curious that this website is the product of an employee of Brigham Young University; I cannot tell if this bears any reflection on websites that are linked here, but the collection is extensive.

    BrainPOP is an interactive instructional tool that uses animated characters, Tim & Moby to introduce and illustrate content material for social studies, math, science, English, arts, health and technology. The interactive resources include quizzes, movies, timelines, and activity pages. Other resources include lesson plans, classroom tools, curriculum calendars, research and much more. Some of what they offer is free. Unfortunately, there is an annual fee for most of their material. My practicum school uses this program extensively. The students really like using this program and actively engage in the material. At the moment, BrainPOP is featuring a segment on "American Indians" and "Digital Citizenship." It introduces little known facts and information that we might not have sought to find in addition to providing us well known facts and information in a new and usually very different perspective. This link is to the "Geography Challenge" an online quiz that extensively tests ones knowledge of the world and could serve as a fun way to present the world.

      Its difficult to sticky note everything you find interesting on an .html site such as this one, but each of these sections has images (many culled from the Library of Congress, which is also an excellent source for images such as these) pertaining to reconstruction, which a teacher could print or make part of a powerpoint presentation to enable students to analyze them.

      In the "additional resources" section there is also a visual timeline of the Reconstruction period, including many of the images found throughout the rest of this website, but organized chronologically, which may be of use to those students who need to look at history in this way.
  • In time, the North abandoned its commitment to protect the rights of the former slaves, Reconstruction came to an end, and white supremacy was restored throughout the South.
  • Today, as a result of extensive new research and profound changes in American race relations, historians view Reconstruction far more favorably, as a time of genuine progress for former slaves and the South as a whole.

    This website, while providing a fairly detailed summary of The Reconstruction, I have bookmarked because of the images it contains. I think pictures and images are a useful tool in shaping students perceptions of history; as Erin evidenced in her last lesson plan, providing students with a model for critically examining images could prove very beneficial to building on their critical thinking abilities.

      The Television News Archive was created and is maintained by Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. AU subscribes to the archive, which allows us to view many of the streaming videos online.

      You can search for a specific news broadcast by topic or date. Often you can find specific segments during a news program or you can watch the entire news program. If you are looking for a specific date in history you can go right the the day, week, or month that the event occurred or was being covered.

      In the classroom, I think this would be a great medium for independent research. Students could focus on a topic or event in recent history and report/analyze the news coverage of the topic/event. In general, the media could help students understand how Americans understood or misunderstood an event.

  • The Vanderbilt Television News Archive is the world's most extensive and complete archive of television news. We have been recording, preserving and providing access to television news broadcasts of the national networks since August 5, 1968.

    The Television News Archive is a database of nightly news broadcasts in the US from 1968. American University subscribes to the database, and it can be accessed through the library's website. At the news archive, you can search the database of nightly news programs for a specific date or topic. Then, you can watch many of these streaming videos online.

They include oral histories, maps of Charlottesville, census reports, city records, political materials, personal papers of residents, newspapers (including two African American papers), as well as images.

      For educators, I think this might be a great way to teach Jim Crow and/or Reconstruction in the South through exploratory web quests. If the students have access to computers in a school, they could investigate the website at their own pace and answer essential questions or pose questions themselves for others to answer. Also, teachers could use the primary sources as classroom aides for their students to examine.
