Interesting article from The Economist about applying distributive creativity and group piecework to journalism. "Under the rubric "My Boss Is a Robot" they are testing whether it is possible to draw on the sort of distributed creativity that the internet has made possible-and faddish-to perform the equivalent of journalistic piecework. To start with, the group has chosen to bash out the kind of article with which Babbage is all too familiar: a write-up of a newly released scientific research paper. Rather than assign the task as a whole to a single person, their system will try to tease apart and outsource different elements of analysis and production."

My sister in law works for Blue Cross in NC and sent me this to invite me to join. I did not join, but I'm completely fasicnated to see how this type of social networking grouped around medicine and health will work out. Yes, WebMD and other SN's related to health exist, but this one is directly sponsored and supported by a health care company.

I wonder how much of this is about collecting information about attitudes and values (notice it starts with a potentially inflammatory question). Why would this group be better than any other forum out there? What is the real motivation, I wonder.

I found this through Kevin Kelly's website. "Quantified Self 2011 is a conference for users and tool makers interested in self-tracking systems. It will be a "working meeting" for the QS community (14 groups worldwide), where we will gather, inspire, and learn from each other as we share and collaborate on self-tracking projects. We will also explore the potential effects of self-tracking on ourselves and society."

I read this article last week, but thought I'd post it to the group after watching the Kevin Kelley talk.

A group effort sharing information about all literacies (digital literacy, media literacy, information literacy, visual literacy, 21st century literacies, transliteracies ) with special focus on all libraries.

Just realized this is missing "geospatial literacy" which is one of the areas I am interested in, but this looks like a great site. Similar to what we are doing on the topic of social informatics via diigo.

The TRG researches what we are trying to do here (on diigo) and what we've been trying to do all week. Create understanding across mediums.

I kind of think that a movement can be a form of a community. In that it is still a group of people with common interests, knowledge, language and established rules. The prime difference I think is that movements are more action oriented to complete specific goals.

Large groups with ignorant members seem to thrive in nature (and democracy?).

I saw this too and was really excited. I caught a story on WNYC yesterday about the importance of curating content, which I'll find and post to the group.

I think there's a special topics course on curation of information/data in the fall!

Does anyone know about this institution? They do interesting work and seem to research the causes of the digital divide.

We have a number of links from the Berkman Center on the Digital Divide Diigo and found it really helpful in our research. You can join the group if you want to post there. Tim Wu, the lawyer who coined the term net neutrality, was a fellow at Berkman, as well as Eszter Hargittai, a scholar discussed in our presentation section, "users: race and income." We also discuss Lawrence Lessig's work, mostly known for creative commons, in the "net neturality" section. He was also a fellow there. This is a few years old but it's a slide presentation from Paul Adams, ex-Googler, currently Facebook product manager. His work was influential in the new Facebook "groups," and the rumored Google product "circles."
