On Getting Boys to Read - 0 views

  •
Many school libraries work hard to try to keep all students but especially boys coming to the Library, reading books and engaging with what they are reading. Many of the strategies work for girls as well as boys and, although an aversion to reading isn't gender specific, every time you investigate some research it always shows that boys read less. This article explains some strategies one library has tried in order to combat boys disengaging from reading. She is not saying these will work for your school, but she has noticed a big uptake in the number of boys in the Library and of course the number of books they are borrowing.

iPad Literacy Stations ~ Mrs.Wideen's Blog - 0 views

I liked this for the Lego Creation Stationhowever there are more ideas here. "At this station, I have pre packaged 4 different ziplock bags of 100 legos each.  Students will choose the lego bag, and take a planning sheet.  Students are asked to draw and write about what they are planning to create.  (The boys in my class are crazy about lego so I thought this would be a great motivator for them.)  Students then will build their creation using their blueprint.  When they are finished, they will take a picture of their creation, add it to the class book that I have created on the Book Creator App and write a summary of their creation and how it compared to what they had originally planned."

The World's Largest Scrabble Game - Hammacher Schlemmer - 1 views

This Scrabble Wall is one of nine done by an artist. It is beautiful, large and expensive. The idea offers us a very cool "word wall" application. I wonder if a project for our VCAL boys would be to create something that offers similar play/word opportunities for our library. A game board that could be used for play or for messages.

Some great ideas providing themes that could be used with a Lego Club. "Lego Fun Friday is a twice-a-month feature.  Each time, we share photos from the building challenge and then announce the next challenge to take place in two weeks.  "

Female authors help broaden men's horizons - 0 views

  •
This article challenges the status quo which reveals that most schools are studying very few books by female authors and that there is an under representation by the media of reviewing books written by female authors. Aviva Tuffield argues that this gives women and men a distorted view of our society and contributes to unconscious bias again genuine equality.
