Staying up-to-date, relevant, on information in your own profession is a moral imperative. We can’t expect what we learned as college students to carry us through a 30 or 40-year career.

Some are used to help students keep track of sources. I’ve listed them and the way we use them below. I’ve tried to give a brief description. It may seem like a lot of tools but we tend to believe that one size doesn’t fit all and the overarching skills supersede the tool itself.

Below are some suggestions for using Diigo: Annotate curriculum documents and add stickies to show where tech integration is happening and could happen. That could be annotated for a group of curriculum writers. Annotate state education agency memos for your administrators. We get memos every day and they are posted online. Immediately, among a team, share the implications of the ideas in the memo, the most important points, and so on.

My students learn about writing mostly as they are writing. They learn very little from a failing grade, except that they can’t write.

Because I have access to their documents so early, I learn much more about my students’ writing and the issues that they need to overcome. This positions me for better teaching. It positions the students for better learning. That’s a win-win.
