To make sure mobile devices are used appropriately, schools must set high expectations with clear rules and sanctions. Then, when a pupil misbehaves (and they will), teachers can deal with the behaviour, not the technology.

f we as teachers fear learning or integrating these new "digital literacies" into our classrooms, is it the same as being afraid of teaching the reading literacy that has taken hold largely in part due to Gutenberg? I realize that this argument is a bit of an oversimplification. However, new literacies will in fact continue to develop and have the potential for significant disruption, much like what happened 500 years ago.

some folks freak about digital communications between students and teachers.  And yet they think nothing about the face-to-face conversation in the hall where no one else is listening.  This is merely lack of comfort with something new. 

Stand by your interactions as a professional and a model for children, and frankly- there’s a digital record to go along as a bonus.

We can watch, helpless or we can commit to finding ways to use this new technology to think new thoughts--about government, citizenship, politics, participation, ownership, teaching, community, justice.
