Part of the problem is that professional development, both pre-service and in-service, does little to build teachers' understanding of how their discipline is used, singularly and in combination with others, to help solve problems and innovate beyond school walls. It's the rare geometry teacher who knows how architects, carpenters, bricklayers, and tile setters use the 3-4-5 triangle in construction technology.
As I began to focus in on the significance of writing and plan how I could contribute to the National Day on Writing's "Why I Write" Celebration, I found myself coming back to the words of George Orwell in his 1946 "Why I Write" essay.
As part of our Schools that Work series, the Edutopia staff profiled School of the Future in New York City. We focused on showing their comprehensive assessment strategy: video, free resources and tools and ten takeaway tips on assessment are provided.
