What is the first thing that comes to your mind, when you hear about hacking? “It’s a cyber crime!”, “that’s illegal”, “imprisonment”, it’s kind of obvious that you envision as a negative or not a legal act.  But what it takes to become a hacker? Well, it actually takes a lot of intelligence, practice, dedication and lot of hard work. A hacker may be defined as someone with an advanced understanding of computers and programming. So, is hacking really bad after all?

We, the general public are not actually aware of what hacking world is off. There are in fact different elusive classes in the hacker community. Hackers who break into the systems and destroy them necessarily are the kind of hackers we know as far. But there are hackers that don’t want to create havoc; these are the white-hat hackers or the “good hackers”. Good hacking? Surprised? Yes, good hacking also is known as ethical hacking; this kind of hackers work inside of the company legally to point out the security flaws, a warning to a cause. Ethical hacking could be public services like consulting, architecture and integration, deployment and operations and more. These good guys support clients in various countries like Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. A lot of companies can have a fighting chance by hiring white-hat hackers. But it’s not always these good guys has that chance because black-hat hackers or “bad hackers” may exploit them.

Now that there’s a clear line between good and bad hacking, what are the things you need to know before being a hacker?

    1. First and the foremost would be basic computer skills, and this does not mean Microsoft Document, excel etc it goes beyond that, you should know how the command line works in windows or Linux and should also be able to know how to use it.

    2. When you are ready with the basics, it’s important to know how the network works and understanding the basics of networking like DHCP, NAT, subnetting, IPV4, IPV6 as such. The more you know about networking, the more you are close to understanding the hacking concepts.

    3. While being a hacker, it’s very crucial to have Linux skills. Nearly the tools that are being used as a hacker are developed in Linux that windows are not capable of. Also, Wireshark is most widely used protocol analyzer which is useful in analyzing TCP/IP traffic and attacks.

    4. Before using your hacking skills in the real world, you need to practice quite a lot many times and for that, you may need an environment that is safe which could be VirtualBox or VMware Workstation.

    5. Security concepts and technologies, wireless technologies these are the things a good hacker must understand.

    6. When you understand the core part, we head up to the intermediate skills and this is where things start to get interesting where you learn scripting, database skills, web applications.

    7. You become a good hacker only when you are not caught and you can’t be a pro-spending your years behind the bars. Forensics can help you from avoiding and evading detection or getting caught.

Apart all these creative thinking, problem-solving skills and most importantly persistence is essential in your journey to become a good hacker. Hackathon is one of the amazing workshops conducted for the good hackers all over the world.

How I see it is, hacking can be neat and clean if we use it in a proper way. Let’s change the definition of hacking in a positive way and welcome more “white-hat” hackers.
