Introduction to Sound - 2 views

    This resource is an interactive introduction to sound. I would use this resource in a lesson on sound and vibrations, and show the website on a smartboard for my students and I to explore together. This interactive resource has multiple pages of images with sounds and animations that allow students to pluck rubber bands to notice sound and compare the speed of sound with the speed of other familiar vehicles. Another page of animations also shows students the speed of sound in the air in relation to thunder and lightning, something all students should be familiar with. I like this resource but I think teacher involvement would be required. It is not something young students could explore or read on their own.

The Magic School Bus "Sound is Vibration" - 0 views

    The resource shows a short video clip from the Magic School Bus episode: In the Haunted House- Sound is Vibration. It talks about sound and their vibrations and also shows Mrs. Frizzle's students demonstrating vibrations on numerous instruments. I selected this video resource because it fits well with my standard 1-PS4-1: provide evidence that vibrating materials can make a sound. I enjoyed watching this short video clip so I would hope my students would enjoy this also. I would use this resource as an introduction to grasp my students attention because it introduces what a vibration is.

    This is a technology resource which is a link to a youtube video. The video is a clip from a Magic School Bus episode on sound. I chose this video because it explains vibration related to sound in simple terms that students can understand. I would most likely use this video as an introduction to a lesson to grab the students' attention.

Changing Sounds - 1 views

    This resource contains an interactive program of various materials that demonstrate sound and vibrations that make sound. The program allows students to change materials, pitch, and force. I chose this resource because it fits well with the standard (1-PS4): Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make a sound and that sound can make materials vibrate. During my lesson, I will focus on this standard, and this program would serve as a fun activity for students. In my lesson, I would use this program as an introduction. This activity would expose students to a variety of sounds and materials while introducing vibrations.

The Phenomenon of Sound Waves - 1 views

    I found this lesson and was immediately intrigued by the different activities. For a young group of students, I would set the different activities up in a stations format and let them explore the sounds and vibrations. This lesson also asks a lot of questions that encourage students to expand on their knowledge of sound. I chose this as a resource because I love the lab stations. I would use the lab stations in a lesson, but I would not follow the lesson exactly as it is written.

    In this exploratory activity, the students will play around with different producers of sound to test what they see, feel, and hear. The students should figure out that vibrations make sound. I chose this activity because it is very hands on and gives the students the opportunity to discover things on their own. I would use this activity after already introducing the simple ideas about sound.

    This lesson is designed to help students understand that vibrations are responsible for the sounds we hear. This is a lesson that I could modify to use to teach about sounds and vibrations. This lesson has a list of resources that could be used individually. I really liked the activities within the lesson. I don't think I would use this exact lesson, but it does have some great components that I could use to create my own lesson

    This resource provides a lesson plan that will help students build an understanding of the concepts of sound (vibration, pitch) through participation in a variety of hands-on experiments. By observing, predicting, and analyzing results, students can actively investigate the science of sound. It says the required time is two weeks but I don't think that much time is necessary to spend on this. It has many activities for students to do that are all hands on and even includes an assessment for the students. I chose this because it fits well with my standard- 1-PS4-1: plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make a sound and that sound can make materials vibrate. I would use this resource in my future classroom by having the students break up into groups and each group would have a different activity to complete and write down their observations.

Liquid Xylophone - 1 views

    This resource shows a video of a women performing a song by using test tubes filled with water to create different pitches. It demonstrates the use of sound and vibrations. It tells you all the materials that you will need, what to do, and what will happen. It also gives you ideas for further activity if you have more time in the class. I chose this resource because I did an activity similar to this in my Methods of Fine Arts class but we used mason jars instead of test tubes, which I believe would be more safe for younger students. Also, the water in each mason jar was a different color and each jar was labeled 1-8. This made it easier when we played a song with the jars. I think this activity would be very fun for students to do because I really enjoyed doing it. You don't have to necessarily follow this lesson plan; you can tweak it to how you want. I would use this resource after teaching my students about vibrations and talking about how sounds change when water levels are different. It goes along with my standard 1-PS4-1: plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make a sound and that sound can make materials vibrate.

Teaching Kids How Sound is Made - 3 views

    This is an activity that is easy to set up, but goes a long way this students. This is a cheap and easy way to have students make the connection between sound and vibration. This would be a great activity to include in stations or centers. I chose this activity because I think it is a great way to get students to understand the correlation of vibrations and sound.

    This technology based resource allows students to create their own sounds and vibrations using a "drum machine." The students are able to change and customize the sounds that they want, if they want a high or low tone, and whether the sound is loud or soft. I chose this resource because it is technology based and something that the students could use in the computer lab or if they have extra time during class to use the computers in the room. It also goes along with my standard 1-PS4-1. I could use this in my future classroom after teaching the students about different sounds and the vibrations that they make. It would be beneficial to have students experiment with this resource and get an understanding for the high and low tones of sounds and their vibrations.

    This lesson allows students to experiment with various sound sources, including their own voices to gain an understanding of the connection between sound and vibration. I chose this resource because I think that it fits well with my standard (1-PS4); Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make a sound and that sound can make materials vibrate. I would use this lesson in my future science classroom by having students break into groups to perform each of the activities from the lesson to demonstrate the different vibrations made from different objects.

    Kohl Children's Museum of Greater Chicago strives to be equally available to guests with any level of physical, visual, auditory, or cognitive challenge. This museum allows students to explore, design, build and test musical instruments to discover how sound is created through vibration. I selected this resource because it sounds like it would be an interesting place to visit on a field trip especially for younger students and it fits well with my standard 1-PS4-1 which talks about vibrating materials creating sounds. I would use this resource by taking a field trip here one day and having students explore the different instruments and the vibrations that they make. This field trip would occur after a unit of learning about sounds and vibrations.

    This is a video that introduces sound, specifically vibration, and teaches a song to students. I chose this video because I know how much young children love music and learning songs. It has a lot of good information about sound and vibration in the short time the song plays. I would use this song to introduce a lesson on sound, or possibly conclude a lesson and review what students have learned.

See the Science of Sound - 1 views

    This resource gives a lab (activity) that deal with vibrations. You need to have a large bowl and cover it with plastic wrap- a rubber band will hold the plastic wrap in place. You then place large sugar crystals on top of the plastic wrap and let students get close and talk into the bowl. The students will be able to watch the sugar crystals "jump" because of the vibrations. I chose this resource because it sounded very interesting and it makes me want to actually test it out to see if it works. I think that my students would enjoy doing this and it would help them understand that sound travels and bounces off objects creating vibrations. I would use this resource in correlation to a lesson about vibrations and sound; It would be a follow up activity for students to do.

    This site provides videos about energy, light, sound, and heat. Students can click on a link and watch a cartoon video that explains what each one of the above subjects are and how they work. After the video is complete, students can take a quick test to test their knowledge of the subject. I would use this source in class as a pretesting measure or as an exit ticket to see if students truly understand the subjects or if they need further explanations.

    This lesson is cool because it involves what students can see everyday outside. It is something they can experience on their way to school, on their way home, or on a summer day at the park. The study of songbirds will help students with some vocabulary words they should be exposed to and learn about why some birds are song birds. Plus, this lesson has an awesome in class activity at the end that allows students to make their own bird sounds and compare their sounds to actual birds.

    This is a website for the Magic House in St. Louis. It gives all of the information to plan a school field trip. It even breaks it out according to age group (grade level). This is a great resource for teachers looking for a field trip idea! The website has tons of information that any elementary educator would find very useful.

    This is a link to the Magic House website. I chose this because I thought it was be a really fun and educational field trip for students. There are so many things to explore at the Magic House. A field trip to the Magic House would fit in with the sound and vibration standard I have because there is a Classic Tour for elementary grades that explores sound.

Homemade Musical Instruments - 1 views

    I found this fun and easy activity on Pinterest for students to do while learning about sounds and vibrations. It would be a very cheap activity for students to create in the classroom because all they need is a Kleenex box, rubber bands, and materials to decorate their guitar with! I chose this resource because it fits into my standard 1-PS4-1 because it will show students that vibrating materials can make sound. I would use this resource after presenting a lesson to my students about vibrations and how it travels through different objects. After learning, I think that students would enjoy making this guitar because it is fun and also shows them how sound travels through objects.

The Sound So Loud That It Circled the Earth Four Times - Facts So Romantic - Nautilus - 0 views

    On 27 August 1883, the Earth let out a noise louder than any it has made since. It was 10:02 AM local time when the sound emerged from the island of Krakatoa, which sits between Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. Wow! This video is crazy awesome! On the website there is a video posted of a volcano in Indonesia erupting. It shows the volcano erupting and then you hear this unexpected BOOM (they call it a shock in the video)! After that all you see is thick gray smoke covering the volcano. This video would be a great resource to incorporate into any lesson over volcanoes erupting, it is a great realistic feature. Before showing the video to students you could make them record what predictions about what they think will happen when the volcano erupts, and then show them the video and discuss what actually happens. Another great feature about this website is that it gives information about the volcano erupting and what were some of the effects from the eruption. It also explains what happened when the volcano made that BOOM noise. Overall I thinks students will love watching a real life volcano erupt, they will most likely think its pretty awesome!

    I wanted to step it up a notch since I loved Dr. Hope's Oobleck lesson plan. I discovered this on pinterest and it is actually Oobleck that moves. This activity incorporates both the texture of the oobleck and the unique sound waves/vibrations that make sound waves. Students ears and fingers will be stunned as they watch and hear the oobleck slide through their fingertips. This experiment can create multiple leading questions, an investigation, and a lengthy discussion.

I think this is a great example of a lesson that will be great for students in class to learn about energy and how it is produced. I would use this site as a resource for teaching mu students about energy.
