Kids Health defines the need for children to have occupational therapy - 1 views

  •
I love this sight because it explains children's occupations, and the need for children to receive OT in plain terms that all can comprehend. If you click on the word occupational therapists in the definition, it further defines OT. Thank you Kids Health for promotion occupational therapy! This sight has all kinds of answers for families with questions about illness, OT, age related concerns etc. It has everything from puberty issues by gender to what is a coma. You even have the option to listen to their examples and explanations instead of just reading them.

CarFit - 2 views

CarFit is a community based program that sponsors events (as a collaborative effort between AOTA, AAA, and AARP) with the purpose of inspecting the older driver in their own vehicle. "trained technicians and/or health professionals work with each participant to ensure they "fit" their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety". It takes about 20 mins after which recommendations for adjustments and adaptations are provided. The website provides FAQs and videos with a lot of information pertaining to the older driver and driver safety. Those of you interested in driving rehab may be interested in participating in an event such as this as a COTA in the future.

University Health Center | Stress Management | A Wellness Lifestyle Approach - 0 views

  •
This article, on the University of Georgia's University Health Center website is geared toward students, however I believe many of the principles listed can carry over in other areas of life, not just academic. The article addresses mindset, nutrition, exercise, spirituality, and other aspects of lifestyle that can affect how we deal with stress.

2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans: Appendix 1 - 1 views

  •
This appendix discusses two issues that arise when translating scientific evidence into physical activity guidance for the public: In scientific terms, total weekly physical activity in the range of 500 to 1,000 MET-minutes produces substantial health benefits for adults. How should this finding be simplified and translated into Guidelines that are understandable by the public?

CDC - Advance Care Planning and Chronic Disease Management - Aging - 0 views

  •
CDC's public health activities to prevent and control disease include a substantial focus on chronic disease management. Advance care planning can be a gift you give yourself and your family. It is about doing what you can to ensure that your wishes and preferences are consistent with the health care treatment you might receive if you were unable to speak for yourself or make your own decisions.

Sexual Health for Women - 2 views

  •
This article addresses the fact that just because you may be paralyzed does not mean your libido and need for sexual expression changes. It also goes on the talk about orgasms and how women can achieve a "normal orgasm", breast health, and birth control.
  •
I am not sure I like that fact that they refer to sexual abilities be less affected in women with SCI than men. In my opinion it is a tad sexist and biased. Aside from that this article contains some information that would be helpful to be aware of going into to working with clients with SCI.

LGBT Health Disparities - 1 views

  •
In my health psych class I did some research on this subject. There are many disparities when it comes to healthcare for individuals who may not feel comfortable with doctors and other healthcare professionals. I think it should be a goal to understand some of these issues and make people comfortable communicating personal concerns, goals, and desires without fear of discrimination.

Health benefits for those who stick to their knitting - 2 views

  •
Just my style! What a great article! This article talks about the great benefits of knitting and what knitting does to keep your hands healthy by way of function. It's a great workout for your hands, fingers and forearms, but not a strenuous workout. Knitting also is a stress relief activity, can improve your mood, relieves anxiety and depression. I have not tried knitting. I have always cross-stitched. I can tell you, when I finish school, this is definitely on my bucket list, along with learning to paint!

Health Benefits Of Sex - Therapeutic Sex - 4 views

  •
I tagged this page because it is important to remember that sex is not just an emotional event, but a definite physiological one as well. We need to remember this for not only our patients but in our own lives. Marriages are hard enough to maintain, but it is even harder if sex is viewed as a weapon. If both parties understand the benefits of a healthy sex life, everybody is a lot better off. Cause "if momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy," lol.

Caring for cancer patients - 1 views

  •
I feel all health care providers should read this article not just OT's. This article talks about how patients may be feeling after being diagnosed with cancer and how we should help them through this. They may not be able to do a lot of the things they were doing but these things are still important to them. It is our job to help them believe that there is still hope. As a health care provider and a daughter of someone that had been diagnosed with cancer, I totally agree with this article. Just because they are diagnosed doesn't mean they have to loose hope.
