New area in cancer therapy - 0 views

  •
I realize this article is mainly about the accolades of the OT Robin Newman. However, I noticed an interesting piece at the end. She is working on a program that focuses on OT treatment for women who experience cognitive difficulties after completing chemotherapy. When my mom went through chemotherapy, the doctors and nurses told us a common side effect was "chemo brain.," where she would forgot how to do common tasks, easily lose her train of though, and not be able to think of words she wanted to say. Chemotherapy affects many areas of the body, including cognitive abilities. OT is definitely qualified to help treat cancer patients regain their cognitive abilities in a therapeutic way. Just another reason to promote OT!

OT and Oncology - 1 views

  •
Oncology is described as an emerging practice area in the world of OT, and currently not many OT/As are working with people with cancer and their families. There are certainly efforts to change this, but for right now many people - both within and outside the profession - are very unfamiliar with how occupational therapy can help cancer patients.

The primary determinant of health for the average person is thought. Not genetics, not exercise or nutrition, but the mind. This has been shown over and over again by the scientific fields of psychoneuroimmunology, psychoneurocardiology, psychoneuroendocrinology, not to mention cancer research and all the various psychosomatic disorders that have been studied.

Respite trip for young burn victims - 0 views

  •
This is about a vacation for youth who have suffered burns at some point in their lives - usually when they are pretty young. Kind of like cancer camps, it gives them a chance to be with peers who understand what they've been through and don't stare at their scars.

Occupational Therapy Toolkit: Treatment Guides and Handouts for Older Adults - 0 views

  •
I don't know about the rest of you but I have trouble coming up with fun and purposeful activities for older adults. I came across this webpage that has ideas on activities for dressing, activities for cancer patients, arthritis patients, stroke victims, and more. Some of the "toolkit" you have to pay for but a lot of the handouts for home exercises are free and fairly simply to understand. I feel like there is something for almost every topic we have talked about his semester.

I posted this link awhile back on my Pinterest, I really enjoy what all this website has to offer us as future practitioners. It literally has everything from information that we can use as practitioners and information that we can give clients. This website addresses pain, ADLs, assessments, certain dx (cancer, diabetes, you name it its probably on here). I advice everyone check this site out. I feel like this site has come up before in another course but maybe I just used it.
