After the success of the Genesis/Megadrive, Sega tried a little too hard to come out on top in the 32-bit generation. Even though they had the CD-Based Saturn in development, Sega also tried to offer existing Genesis owners a way to "upgrade" their console to a 32-bit machine that could offer more arcade-quality games.

Video games have made incredible strides over the past decade. Improvements were made in game play, controls, story telling, graphics, and of course multiplayer modes. While the Internet has changed video games, mostly for the better, the big three home consoles, Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3, and X Box 360 offer some horsepower for video gamers of all ages. The two biggest handhelds on the market namely the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS offer convenience and portability as well as power that easily equals last generations home consoles. But video games are not strictly a console-based commodity any more. The home computer has seen its share of video games as well, and just might be the gaming machine of the future. While looking ahead is fine and necessary, taking a step back to grade the top ten video games of the decade is difficult for many gamers. Of course, the decade was driven by many franchises; so many franchise games make appearances on the top ten video games of the decade.

Beat'em ups, which are also known as Brawlers (and belt scroll games in Japan), generally focus on one player taking on a large number of enemies in some form of melee oriented combat.  The beat'em up genre is also well known for offering co-op gameplay for 2-4 players, which for some people is a big part of the genre's appeal.  The genre should not be confused with one on one fighting games inspired by Street Fighter II, which is a common mistake some gamers make.  Though there is some shared history and crossover between the two genres in terms of characters and certain gameplay elements, they are not the same.

When Nintendo announced the Super Nintendo we all asked why? The NES was still king. Did we really want to spend money on a new system that would play basically the same games with slightly better graphics? And the first games released on the Super NES proved that point. The 1990s were a great time to be a kid, and one reason for that was because the Super NES, often considered one of the best systems that Nintendo has ever made, reigned supreme even as the Sega Genesis tried constantly to dethrone it. Apparently, according to the Everything Preschool.com Calendar the month of August presents an unusual but fun week-long holiday during week one to celebrate video games. Research efforts turned up very brief allusions to Video Game Week in August but none of the sources offered much explanation regarding the holiday's origin or details of how people celebrate this unusual holiday. So I've decided to pay tribute to the occasion my own way: Through old school video game nostalgia.

Although the majority of today's gamers would laugh up their sleeves in derision if shown a classic video game from the 80s, the fact remains that this was really the decade that started the video game phenomenon, and the games that were the pioneers of this phenomenon, though graphically far inferior to today's offerings, were some of the most brilliantly craft, addictive games ever to grace a monitor or TV screen. Arcades ruled the day, with youth willing to do any odd job to earn a few quarters so they could run down to the local arcade and plug those quarters into games like Pac-Man, Defender, and Galaga. Most adults turned up their noses at these dark, musty caves with their overwhelming cacophony of beeps and blasts, but to kids these arcades were heaven on earth.
