I love RPGs, also known as role-playing games. No, I'm not talking about those games where you put on a makeshift wizard hat and are over-excited over the fact that your tin figurine just defeated Blorgon the Great. No, what I'm talking about are the videogames where you can explore a world to almost no end, where the storyline keeps you guessing at every turn (not always the case, sadly. I mean, how many times do we have to find the seven crystals, or fight and kill the last of an ancient race, etc.?), where your enemy kindly waits while you power up your Rain of Ultimate and Total Annihilation final move, the one where you summon thousands of swords from the sky to fall on one opponent, while lifting a boulder from the ground with your bare hands and throwing it on top of him, then to finish it up, call down the moon from the heavens to fall on his exact spot...which then only ends up doing 450 damage HP (about 1/20 of his damage meter) because your opponent was in a defensive stance during all of that. THOSE are the RPGs that I'm talking about.

Nintendo's Virtual Console is a key component of the Wii, granting the system not just a little backwards compatibility but a whole lot of it. Eventually, it could be in the same league as Turner's GameTap, albeit with a different focus: No PC games, no arcade titles, just selections from every Nintendo home console... and every vanished major competitor, like the Turbografx 16 and Sega Genesis.

On September 30, 2006, I unveiled my pet project to the world: A list of the 100 best NES games ever. The list wasn't perfect - lists never are - but the reception was generally warm. At the very least, it was warm enough to warrant a sequel. So now here we are, fourteen months later. It has now been three full years since the launch of SydLexia.com, and I figured there's no better way to celebrate than with a list of 100 best SNES games ever. Real fucking creative, I know. I had wanted to do a list of the best Game Boy titles ever, but the preliminary meetings didn't go well. There was this whole huge argument about whether or not the list should be just original Game Boy games or if Game Boy Color games counted as well. Then one guy kept saying we should include Game Boy Advance games because he was born in 1991 and he had no idea what this "Super Mario Land" thing that everyone kept bringing up was. Then someone pointed out to him that he could have looked it up on Wikipedia instead of whining that he didn't know what it was. Punches were thrown, blood was spilled, and everyone accused at least one other person of being gay. So then I did what any self-respecting American would do in my situation: I gave up on my dream and decided to attempting something significantly easier. Thus, the SNES list was born.

Videogames come and videogames go, but nothing will ever hold sway over an entire generation like the good ol' Nintendo Entertainment System. Some estimate that 800 NES games were released for the system from 1985 to 1995; far too many for us to process. If you had a normal childhood, you invariably missed a lot of good NES games, unless you were that hopelessly spoiled kid who owned every single release and had Super Mario Bros. 3 imported from Japan a year before everyone else got it. Then he charged his friends a quarter per life to play it, the little shit. No one liked that kid.

Break out the cake and bunting and then put them on ice, or something: Nintendo's Virtual Console is almost two years old. There are currently over 250 emulated retro games available in Europe, drawn from eight different gaming platforms and covering a span of two decades. It's a daunting tombola of choice, so here's our rundown - in no particular order - of the Virtual Console games that you really should download.

A competent repackaging of a 1999 PlayStation compilation, with a lovely 50% extra thrown in (adding up to a total of 15 games, instead of the PSOne's 10), Classics charts the early years at Konami ranging from 1982's Scramble to 1987's Contra (or Gryzor). The package contains all the usual extras such as information on the games, pictures of the game board and scans of the control sheets to ensure you know how to play. As some of the games are vertical and others horizontal, it's possible to choose from various orientations and multiplayer options on some games which, from a single cartridge, is a nice feature. But with any retro collection, we're only really interested in two questions: Are the classic games we really want included, and do they still play well today? The answer (as always) is yes and no to both questions. Let's delve into the packet of Revels and see what delights we find...

You know how many games were released for the various Sinclair formats over the years? We'll tell you - dozens. Maybe hundreds. Actually, thousands. Maybe a million. A lot. So choosing the fifty best from a list consisting of "a lot" of games is no easy task. That's why we asked you, the Retro Gamer massive, to do the legwork for us with your voting gloves. Vote you did, and the results are in. With Your Sinclair only bursting into fragrant life in 1986, review scores for older games have been taken from re-release or compilation reviews where available.

Here we are another year, and another list for you to look at. Seriously why do we need to show off a list of games for a 16 bit console that most people call the 2nd best for its time? Because it OWNED, that's why. The Sega Genesis was when gaming went from toy to fanism, where lines were drawn in the sand and you either wore the blue or the red. If you were in LA at the time, you could not go into a red neighborhood without being mocked about blast processing. Riots ensued and musicals were written (...c'mon no one saw that piece I did 8 years ago?) and to this day the Genesis does what the Nintendon't, and by that I mean make good Saturday morning cartoons.

In an industry where an obese plumber can become a cultural icon, it's no wonder that in video games, weird is normal. However nutty they get, these oddities were never as strange as the ones for the Atari 2600. Ironically the most bizarre of these came out around the crash of the video game industry, causing most of them to go unnoticed in the rubble of a once great gaming console. The Atari 2600, revolutionary, ahead of its time and most importantly loads of fun. No longer did we ask mom and dad for chutes and ladders, parcheesi or hungry hungry hippo. Now we had an interactive experience in the palm of our hands, literally!

These are some of the very best freeware adventure games I've played. I don't claim to have played every freeware adventure game ever made, but I've played quite a few in my time. These, in my opinion, are the ten best (subject to change, in no particular order...)

I was born in the 70's, so I have fond memories of the Nintendo Entertainment System. From having to blow in the cartridge to get it to work, stacking cartridges inside the system and writing down codes because there was no save feature.

With Science Fiction television and movies being so popular with the younger age bracket, it is of no surprise that such source material became popular fodder for video game productions. Even the first ever video arcade games such as Computer Space, Space War, and the world renowned classic Space Invaders were based on science fiction themes. Since the video game home console debuted in the mid 70s, there have been probably more science fiction video games made than movies and television series from the same genre. Even with such a large influx of new games and systems out there, it is hard for me not to think of all my most favorite games from time to time. This will make me sound like an old fuddyduddy, but they just don't make 'em like they used to. Here is a list, in no particular order, of golden games I wish I could play through again.

When I played the Sega Master System for the first time in Macy's in 1987, I had already owned the NES for about three months. The first game I played (or watched, I can't remember) was Choplifter. After seeing how amazing the graphics were compared to the NES, I knew I had to have the SMS A.S.A.P. Shortly after, I bought one in Crazy Eddie and it became my favorite system for the next two and a half years (until the Genesis and Turbo Grafx 16 came out). While it never really became popular, due to almost no third party support and the near-monopoly the NES had (which outsold it by about 12 to 1!), it had some truly outstanding now-classic games, and the graphics and accessories (liquid crystal 3-D glasses and the best light gun at the time) were way ahead of their time. Sadly, I still dream about what could have been if things had went right. Anyway, it's going to be extremely tough to come up with a top 10 list, but here I go...

For about a year the Neo Geo Pocket Color was the coolest portable on the market. But then people started to hear the word "advance" and started to realize that there was no way the Neo Geo Pocket could ever trump Nintendo. But that's okay, in it's short like the Neo Geo Pocket pumped out a number of high quality titles that capitalized on their many old games. But it wasn't enough, so we got to wondering: what did we miss by not having the Neo Geo Pocket Color around still? Here's a lot of ten games we should have had, but never did. -Cyril Lachel

No one will ever be able to agree on a list of the best video games of all time. But I think I can make one that at least some people will like. After all, there are, in my opinion, certain obvious games that can be appreciated by everyone.
