It's great how video games have progressed over the past twenty years but every once in a while its nice to sit back and relax with an old school beat 'em up video game. Beat 'em up video games are games where the player controls a character that basically runs around beating up everybody on screen. The game is mostly made up of punches and kicks (and occasionally a weapon) but no complicated moves to execute like in fighting games. These are the ten best beat 'em video games of all-time.

The 1980s were the glory days for arcade video games. Sure, we've got virtual reality and movie-level graphics on today's arcade consoles, but where's the love? You will have noticed, no doubt, that it has been a long, long time since an arcade video game became a pop culture icon. Donkey Kong inspired a dance, Pac-Man inspired a song, and even Lou Reed included lyric about putting money down on Robotron. The new video games may look better than the classics, but why is the most successful movie ever made about video games dedicated to two guys trying to set the world record for Donkey Kong? Here is an entirely arbitrary list of the five greatest classic arcade video games from the early 1980s based on the shocking amount of time I spent at the local Putt-Putt arcade during my misspent youth. You may be disagree, but keep in mind that you that are totally wrong if do.

The fighting game genre has spawned many classics- I know that for myself and many other gamers, some of our earliest or fondest arcade memories are set to countless games of Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. I begged my mom for a video game console after playing Mortal Kombat in the arcade, and probably wouldn't have ever ended up a gamer at all if not for those (at the time) wonderful graphics and enthralling shouts of "Finish him!". When video game consoles leaped into the 16 bit age my friend and I each got a different console. My friend decided to go with boring old Mario and the Super Nintendo. I decided to go with the much cooler Sega Genesis. For the next several years we debated which one was better, but there was no debate. The video game sales said it all. For video game purists, more advanced technology does not necessarily mean a better game or a better gaming experience. Sometimes, the older games are still the best. The reason so many new games fail is because they lose sight of what a video game should be. Realistic 3D graphics are great, but if there is no decent story to back them up, if game play is too convoluted, or if failing one task sets you back 3 screens and 30 minutes, we won't want to play and we won't recommend the game to our friends. When we are looking for a video game, for the most part, what we want more than graphics is fun. It is, at heart, a game, right? With that in mind, here is a list of games that got it right.

The first real arcade quality handheld video game was the Nintendo Game Boy which was not released in North America until the 1990s. The Game Boy was the first to have an actual working ( although primitive ) monitor for game graphics to be reproduced on. The fact that no actual miniature monitor existed in the 1980s did not stop toy companies from claiming they were releasing hand held video games.

The only game console I ever owned was Super Nintendo and I spent hours glued to the television monitor swinging through the streets as Spider-Man in Maximum Carnage or destroying robots in any of a number of Mega Man games. Sega made up more ground in the realm of software support and addictive game play. I never thought I'd write a "top ten" list, but I figure that out of the over three hundred articles I've written for this site I'd be safe with this list that will probably contain around ten entries. 16 bit systems are certainly a thing of the past, a relic of the early 1990s that someone with an X-Box would think came out of the 1970s. However, the 16 Bit systems (namely Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo) were responsible for some of the most enjoyable and visually impressive games of all time. This list is devoted to naming and giving honor to some of the best in the bunch. They are in no particular order.

The punches, the kicks, the body slams... does anything quiet compare to the thrill of old school wrestling? The answer is no, and if you answer was "yes lots of things" then I would recommend you move along to another article (preferably one of my own).

A couple of years ago I wrote up a piece called Closing Time which examined the last official releases for popular game consoles, and some no-so-popular ones too. Earlier this year I finally got around to adding a Game Boy Advance entry. Yeah it had been over a year since the last game was released but I just kept hoping one more title would sneak out. If another game had been released after July 31st 2008 then the Game Boy namesake would have made it 20 years. Now of course this wasn't one single system that lasted 20 years, three distinct systems were tagged "Game Boy" over this span. Most of the longevity can be credited to the original B&W model which had a shelf life of just over a decade. I bet that little guy had the longest lifespan of any game system... well, did it?
