I think you need to be familiar with the sensitizing concepts where researcher can loosely operationalized notions such as stress, interaction, and learning before entering the field and "look" for the notions during the observations. I know it feels less an inquiry or qualitative methods because researcher loosely operationalized the notions, but I think it is a good starting point to guide less experience qualitative researcher during the observations.

I think qualitative methods can be applied to answer "How" research questions too!
