    En el marco de los acontecimientos políticos que se suceden en Venezuela, a partir de la llegada al poder de Hugo Chávez, nos proponemos como objetivo de este ensayo, interpretar la participación ciudadana desde la representación social que construyen los propios sujetos (grupos comunitarios), que nos permita acceder acepción. Teóricamente nos fundamentamos en los aportes de las representaciones sociales, de la construcción social de la realidad, del interaccionismo simbólico y en la sociología de la alteridad. Metodológicamente se emplean técnicas como los grupos de discusión, las entrevistas abiertas, la observación participante, y la revisión documental. Preliminarmente podemos concluir que la radicalización y la pugnacidad política son algunos de los elementos asociados al proceso de participación ciudadana, generando en el actual escenario sociopolítico el re-establecimiento de una conciencia participativa que ha hecho que el ciudadano común haga uso de los medios constitucionales y no constitucionales para hacer valer su opinión y derechos en este divergente panorama de conflictividad.
